Fort Bend County Residents Invited Behind the Scenes of Law Enforcement Through Fall 2026 Citizens Police Academy
For many residents, interactions with law enforcement happen during emergencies, traffic stops, community events, or neighborhood meetings. This fall, the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office is offering community members an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of what happens behind the scenes through its Fall 2026 Citizens Police Academy.
The free 11-week program is now accepting applications and nominations from Fort Bend County residents interested in learning more about the responsibilities, operations, and specialized services provided by the Sheriff’s Office. Classes will be held Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Gus George Law Enforcement Academy, located at 1521 Eugene Heimann Circle in Richmond.
Designed to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve, the Citizens Police Academy gives participants a firsthand look at how public safety services are delivered across one of Texas’ fastest-growing counties.
A Closer Look at Public Safety in Fort Bend County
Throughout the program, participants will hear directly from division commanders, program managers, and subject matter experts responsible for critical public safety functions throughout Fort Bend County.
According to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, attendees will explore a wide range of topics, including Patrol Operations, Criminal Investigations, Homeland Security, Narcotics Investigations, Detention Services, Emergency Communications, Training, and other specialized units.
Participants will also have opportunities to tour Sheriff’s Office facilities, meet members of the executive command staff, and interact with Sheriff Eric Fagan during the course.
What Participants Will Learn
The Fall 2026 Citizens Police Academy curriculum provides a comprehensive overview of law enforcement operations. Sessions include tours of detention facilities, demonstrations by SWAT personnel, discussions about criminal investigations and forensic evidence collection, emergency communications operations, court security, emergency management programs, and the law enforcement training process.
One of the program’s most anticipated sessions introduces participants to a law enforcement firearms training simulator, allowing attendees to experience realistic decision-making scenarios similar to those officers may encounter in the field.
The academy also highlights volunteer opportunities and community emergency preparedness initiatives, including information about the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and other public safety programs available to residents.
Building Community Partnerships
Citizens Police Academies have become a popular way for law enforcement agencies nationwide to increase transparency, encourage civic engagement, and foster stronger relationships with residents.
For Fort Bend County residents, the program offers an opportunity to better understand the challenges, responsibilities, and decision-making processes involved in modern policing while connecting directly with the personnel who serve the community each day.
The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office says the academy is intended to promote greater understanding of law enforcement and the criminal justice system while strengthening partnerships between the agency and the public.
