Katy ISD's Groundbreaking ECG Screening Initiative Prioritizes Student Health

February 21 2024

Katy ISD recently reported a highly successful turnout for its inaugural district-wide electrocardiogram (ECG) screening initiative, held at the first University Interscholastic League (UIL) physical exam of 2024. The leading-edge initiative saw 65 cheerleaders voluntarily participating, signaling a robust endorsement of the district's proactive approach towards student healthcare.

The ECG screenings, facilitated by Katy ISD's dedicated team of nurses at Legacy Stadium, underscores Katy ISD's commitment to employ cutting-edge medical technology to ensure the health welfare of its students and staff.

"We are thrilled to see such a positive response from our student-athletes and their families regarding the optional ECG screenings," Lance Carter, Executive Director of Athletics at Katy ISD, expressed his gratification. "This initiative reflects our ongoing dedication to prioritize the health and safety of our students, and we believe that early detection through ECG screenings can play a vital role in ensuring their overall well-being."

Initially announced in December of 2023, the ECG initiative builds on the district's proactive healthcare strategy, particularly after the recent procurement of 10 state-of-the-art ECG devices through a significant donation from AETNA.

Lance Nauman, Director of Risk Management at Katy ISD, shared his gratitude towards AETNA for their support. "The overwhelming participation in the ECG screenings emphasizes the importance of early detection in safeguarding the cardiac health of our students and staff," he noted.

The significance of this initiative was tragically highlighted by the loss of 16-year-old cheerleader Callie Marie Mitchell from Morton Ranch High School due of an undetected heart condition in August 2023. Her parents have since emerged as pivotal advocates, urging students, parents, and guardians to take advantage of this optional service by getting screened.

While the ECG service will be available for all Katy ISD health plan participants and their qualified dependents enrolled in Katy ISD's Health Plan, the first ECG screening slot for qualified staff is scheduled for spring 2024. The next UIL physical for students, including further ECG screening opportunities, is set for April 30.
