Katy ISD KEYS Mentoring Program Seeks Volunteers as 2025-26 School Year Nears
With the 2025-2026 school year just around the corner—starting August 13, 2025— Katy ISD is calling on adults across the Katy area to consider becoming a KEYS Mentor (Keep Encouraging Youth toward Success), a program designed to change lives through meaningful one-on-one relationships rather than academic tutoring. Available on every campus at every grade level, KEYS focuses on the power of connection, giving students a trusted adult who believes in their potential.
“Every child is one caring adult away from being a success story,” youth advocate Josh Shipp famously said, and KEYS embodies that belief. Mentors commit to spending one hour per week during the school day, building trust and sparking hope in students who need extra encouragement.

The Proven Impact of Mentoring
According to MENTOR, the national mentoring partnership, youth with mentors are 55% more likely to enroll in college and 78% more likely to volunteer in their own communities. In addition, mentored students are 46% less likely to use drugs and demonstrate improved self-confidence and interpersonal skills.
But mentoring isn’t just life-changing for students—it’s transformative for adults, too. MENTOR reports that 76% of mentors say they became more patient, understanding, and fulfilled through the experience. Many describe mentoring as a way to give back while also growing personally and professionally.
How the KEYS Program Works
Students are recommended for KEYS by teachers, counselors, and administrators. Community mentors—ranging in age, background, and experience—are matched with a student by the campus KEYS liaison, who provides support throughout the relationship. Weekly meetings take place in monitored campus settings, such as the library, ensuring a safe and positive environment for both students and mentors.
To become a KEYS mentor, volunteers must:
- Complete the KEYS application and background check
- Register through Katy ISD’s Raptor Volunteer system
- Complete KEYS 101 Mentor Training
- Commit to one hour each week for one school year
“Being a mentor is about being present more than being perfect,” program leaders emphasize.
A Tradition of Volunteerism in Katy ISD
Volunteerism is ingrained in the culture of Katy ISD, where teachers and principals regularly recognize the value of community members who give their time to help children thrive. With flexible scheduling and district support, KEYS makes it simple for working professionals, retirees, and busy parents to get involved.
