Katy City Park Upgrades Set for January: Turf Field and Pickleball Courts Coming Soon

October 06 2025

A key milestone in the City of Katy’s Parks, Trails, and Recreation Master Plan is now on the calendar. According to recent permit filings, construction on the long-anticipated Katy City Park - Turf and Pickleball project is slated to begin on January 31, 2026, with completion targeted for late May 2026.

Located at 5850 Franz Road, Katy City Park is set to receive a sweeping renovation that reflects the city’s commitment to expanding high-quality, multi-use recreational spaces for its growing population. The $2.5 million project will be overseen by Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc., the nationally recognized engineering and design firm previously confirmed to lead the design effort.

What’s Included in the Project?

Spanning over 102,000 square feet, the renovation includes:

  • A synthetic turf retrofit of the existing multipurpose field

  • Pickleball court retrofit to four courts and updates to existing tennis courts

  • New sidewalks to improve pedestrian connectivity

  • Upgraded fencing, site furnishings, and a stormwater detention system to manage runoff from the new improvements

This project is funded through public resources and is being executed on public land as part of the City’s broader strategy to modernize aging infrastructure and support more dynamic recreational opportunities.

A Next Step in Katy’s Long-Term Parks Vision

The turf and pickleball project builds upon the vision laid out in the 2040 Parks, Trails, and Recreation Master Plan, which was first unveiled earlier this year. In February 2025, Mayor Dusty Thiele highlighted the initiative during his State of the City address hosted by the Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, pointing to the project as a reflection of Katy’s investment in quality-of-life enhancements.

Originally announced as part of a larger plan to transform Katy City Park into a more versatile, inclusive, and community-friendly destination, the renovation will help support growing demand for both youth and adult sports facilities. The city also aims to create spaces that can double as venues for fitness activities, neighborhood gatherings, and wellness programming.

A Park with Community Legacy

Katy City Park is already a local favorite for sports and family outings. It features lighted baseball and softball fields, six ADA-accessible tennis courts, a covered basketball pavilion, a fitness court, and a multipurpose field. It’s also home to Katy Play Station, Texas’ largest inclusive playground for children with disabilities, celebrated for its unique train-themed design honoring the historic MKT Rail Line.

These existing amenities are open to the public for rental seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., and the new renovations will further enhance the park’s year-round usability and community impact.

Looking Ahead

Once construction begins in January, residents can expect visible changes to the park’s layout, especially in the multipurpose field and court areas. Temporary closures and detours may be necessary throughout the spring, but the city is aiming to complete the work before summer programming ramps up.

This renovation is part of a broader wave of upcoming projects from the City of Katy’s Parks and Recreation Department, which manages 11 parks and hosts a variety of public events throughout the year. Future plans include upgraded trail systems, new recreational programming, and continued efforts to ensure accessibility for all residents.

As the city continues to grow, Katy City Park remains a central hub for family fun, community pride, and active living—and come summer 2026, its newest upgrades will be ready to welcome the community once again.
