Katy City Park Multipurpose Field Renovation Announced as Part of City's Parks and Recreation Master Plan
The City of Katy has announced plans for a major renovation at Katy City Park, located at 5850 Franz Road, as part of the 2040 City of Katy Parks, Trails, and Recreation Master Plan. The multipurpose field renovation, expected to begin later this budget year, includes new facilities, expanded parking, and upgraded amenities designed to enhance the park’s functionality and accessibility.
The proposed improvements include a restroom building, synthetic turf field, expanded parking, pickleball courts, a 10,000-square-foot parks and operations building, and enhanced fencing for sports areas. Additional upgrades will include sidewalk extensions and stormwater detention improvements to support future developments.
A Key Part of Katy’s Long-Term Parks Vision
This renovation aligns with the City of Katy’s long-term vision to enhance public recreation spaces, expand accessibility, and create multi-use environments that serve youth and adult sports teams, community gatherings, and passive recreation opportunities. The City’s Parks, Trails, and Recreation Master Plan outlines seven key goals, including upgraded playground equipment, improved trail connectivity, and an increased focus on community-driven recreation programs.

According to the plan, balancing field space for sports teams while preserving green spaces for passive enjoyment is a major priority, ensuring that Katy’s parks serve a broad range of recreational needs. The Katy City Park renovation is a direct response to these goals, aiming to enhance user experience and support the city’s growing population.
Kimley-Horn Expected to Lead Design
The draft design, released by Mayor Dusty Thiele during the State of the City address hosted by the Katy Area Chamber of Commerce on February 20, 2025, suggests that Kimley-Horn, a nationally recognized engineering, planning, and design consulting firm, will be leading the project’s design. Kimley-Horn, founded in 1967 and headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, has extensive experience in land development, transportation planning, and recreational facility design. The firm has worked on numerous large-scale projects nationwide and has been consistently recognized as a top workplace and industry leader in urban planning.
Current Amenities at Katy City Park
Katy City Park is already home to multiple sports fields, including lighted baseball and softball fields, a covered three-court basketball pavilion, six ADA-accessible tennis courts, and a soccer/multipurpose field. These facilities are available for rental Monday through Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
The park is also home to Katy Play Station, Texas’ largest inclusive playground for children with disabilities. This 13,000-square-foot facility is designed as a tribute to the MKT Rail Line, making it a unique and award-winning attraction for families in the Katy community.
Enhancing Recreational Opportunities for the Katy Community
The Katy City Park multipurpose field renovation is expected to provide expanded opportunities for sports leagues, fitness activities, and community gatherings, contributing to the City’s broader efforts to enhance recreational spaces.
The City of Katy’s Parks and Recreation Department oversees 11 parks, manages community events, and is working to expand programming that serves residents of all ages. The department plans to introduce additional health and wellness programs, educational classes, and creative arts workshops, ensuring that public spaces serve both active and leisure-based recreation needs.
