For residents of Anniston, a familiar Houston-area bakery name is headed closer to home. Karma Kolaches has leased approximately 1,300 square feet of retail space in the Shops at Katy Pointe, which is located at the northwest corner of Clay Road and Porter Road in Katy.

The lease adds another food-and-beverage tenant to a retail center surrounded by a rapidly growing residential population. More than 4,300 homes are projected at buildout around the immediate Clay and Porter roads intersection, according to marketing materials for the property, while several established and developing neighborhoods — including Katy Pointe, Marcello Lakes, Ventana Lakes, Katy Manor and others — surround the site.

For families making the morning school run, commuters heading toward the Grand Parkway or neighbors simply looking for a new breakfast stop, the addition could make the Shops at Katy Pointe a little more useful in everyday life.

Karma Kolaches Brings a Modern Spin to a Texas Breakfast Tradition

Karma Kolache & Dessert has built its identity around taking the familiar Texas kolache shop and stretching the menu well beyond traditional sausage-and-cheese combinations.

The company describes its approach as “gourmet kolaches with a modern twist,” combining Texas breakfast-shop familiarity with more unconventional flavors and an inclusive menu featuring halal, non-pork and vegetarian choices. Its current menu includes smoked brisket, Philly cheesesteak, jalapeño popper, boudin, sausage and gravy, chorizo with egg and cheese, mac and cheese, pepperoni pizza and traditional breakfast combinations. Donuts, croissants, kronuts, coffee drinks and other pastries round out the selection.

That willingness to experiment has been part of Karma Kolaches for years. By late 2017, when plans for its third location were announced in Spring, the local company was already serving creations including buffalo chicken, macaroni and cheese, spicy boudin, pulled pork and jalapeño popper kolaches.

The concept has continued expanding since then. Karma Kolache's current website lists locations serving communities including Spring, Cypress, College Station, Sugar Land and Tomball, showing how the once-small Houston-area operation has grown into a broader Texas bakery brand.

For Anniston, the Katy Pointe lease means those specialty kolaches, pastries and breakfast options are poised to become part of the area's expanding neighborhood retail mix.

Why Shops at Katy Pointe Is Drawing More Retail Attention

The location helps explain why another restaurant concept is choosing this corner of Katy.

Shops at Katy Pointe sits just over 1.5 miles from the Grand Parkway and Clay Road, according to the property's leasing materials. Paetow High School and Stockdick Junior High are less than a mile away, with more than 4,000 students enrolled between the two schools. The center is also within Katy Independent School District and is bordered by several large residential communities.

Demographic estimates included in the Shops at Katy Pointe materials point to especially fast growth. The population within three miles of the center grew an estimated 64.08% between the 2020 Census and 2026, reaching more than 107,000 people. Within five miles, the estimated population exceeds 262,000. The same report estimates that more than 86% of occupied housing units within one mile are owner-occupied.

Those numbers help put the Karma Kolaches lease in context. What may look like another bakery announcement is also part of the steady shift occurring along Clay Road as rooftops, schools and neighborhood services increasingly cluster around this part of Katy.

Katy Pointe's leasing plan shows an existing Phase I retail center along with a roughly 10,000-square-foot Phase II center under construction. Other uses identified at the property include a liquor store and Sunterra Nail Spa, while additional retail space remains available.

A Growing Breakfast Brand Meets a Growing Katy Neighborhood

Kolaches themselves have deep roots in Texas. Czech immigrants brought versions of the yeast-based pastry to the state generations ago, and the food eventually became closely associated with Texas road trips, bakeries and breakfast counters. Karma Kolaches represents a newer chapter in that tradition, pairing the familiar format with fillings ranging from barbecue and Tex-Mex flavors to vegetarian and halal choices.

That mix could make the coming Shops at Katy Pointe location particularly relevant in a young, family-heavy part of the Katy area. The median age within one mile of the center is estimated at 31, and more than 60% of households in that same radius have three or more people, according to the shopping center's demographic report.

For residents of Anniston, it is another sign that commercial development is following the residential growth around Clay and Porter roads — bringing more everyday dining and service options closer to the neighborhoods where people already live.

What Happens Next

The announced transaction covers 1,300 square feet of retail space leased by Karma Kolaches from Katy Pointe Investments LLC. Kevin Sims, Nick Ramsey and Ben Postma of NewQuest represented the landlord, while Abdul Sabha of Huntington Properties represented the tenant.

An opening date was not included in the lease announcement.

As Karma Kolaches moves toward opening at Shops at Katy Pointe, residents can expect another locally rooted Houston-area food concept to join a corner of Katy that continues to evolve alongside the families, schools and neighborhoods surrounding it.
