The Copperfield Community Center was damaged during our February freeze. The CCA has a committee working on updating the community center and hope to have it opened by the first of 2022.

EMERGENCY VEHICLES AND FIRE TRUCK CLEARANCE

The Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department is still requesting homeowners assist in addressing the low hanging trees within the Copperfield Community. Low hanging limbs and branches are causing damage to the fire departments equipment and damage to the homeowners’ trees, hampering the response to emergency calls. Most of the fire departments equipment is 13 feet tall and therefore need a 14 foot clearance from trees that hang over the streets. Routes to locations have to be altered to avoid these areas and some areas have no alternate route; leaving no recourse but to park and walk to the locations.

EGRETS AND NIGHT HERONS

Prevention is Crucial - Egrets, herons and other migratory birds are protected by Federal International Treaty, it’s illegal for residents to harass or harm the birds once they lay eggs. Preventing the birds from building nests on residential property or in our parks is key.

Use these tactics between now and February:
  1. Trim your tree and remove dead wood, these birds favor oak trees and other hardwoods. But will nest in other mature trees as well. Trim your tree canopy to allow sunlight between limbs and other nearby trees. Experts say this is the MOST effective step.
  2. Remove any old inactive nest in your trees.

February - Egret Prevention Tools!

This is the only opportunity homeowners have to scare the birds away and to disrupt the cycle. Any home with mature trees is a potential nesting site.
  • Visual deterrents - Hang aluminum pie plates, Mylar balloons, beach balls with shiny streamers or other moving objects in large trees.
  • Noisemakers - Pump-style air horns, whistles, clappers and even children’s toys are effective. Make as much noise as possible aimed at the bird.
  • Bright lights - High-intensity flashlights, strobe lights, flashing holiday lights can be effective.
  • Water sprayers - Power sprayers and pump-style toy water shooters can help. Homemade PVC pipe sprayers can help reach tall tree limbs.
  • Pool poles - Telescoping pool safety poles can be used to reach and remove early nesting material.
  • Any Non-lethal devices.
  • Check trees daily and remove the start of any nest quickly. Once birds begin sitting on the nest, eggs are probably present and birds cannot be harassed. If you have not yet taken action to prevent nesting on your property, please do so now!

Disturbing or removing nests regardless of whether or not there may be eggs or hatchlings within. It is illegal to “disturb or destroy the eggs, nest or young of a bird that is not a game bird.” Tex. Parks & Wild. Code Ann. Sec. 64.002(a)(3). Likewise, one may not “destroy or take the nest, eggs or young of any wild game bird, wild bird or wild fowl protected by this code...” Id. at Sec. 64.003. This is the law with which we work and every violation is up to a $500 fine, plus civil restitution for the loss of each bird. The fines and restitution can add up quickly, especially when one considers that everyone participating in the violation may be cited. I hasten to add that the birds have separate, but similar, protection under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act as enforced by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

For colonial nesting water birds like Egrets and Herons, every nest in a colony is considered active if any nest in the colony is active. Once they arrive in an area and establish a rookery, the entire area is essentially protected. It is not a “one off” tree-by-tree or nest-by-nest review. Regardless of whether a nest structure is “active,” a physical nest structure may not be taken, collected or possessed. These particular birds tend to migrate and nest beginning in February and ending sometime in July. Once they establish a nest, it must be left undisturbed. This means that it is illegal to remove a nest or try to drive the birds away from the nest by engaging in mitigation efforts such as air horns, lights, whistles, etc. These activities are appropriate before nests are established and you are trying to discourage the birds from nesting in a certain area. The use of fireworks, laser pointers, chemical sprays or anything else that has the potential to injure the birds is prohibited.

  • Please note that current standing automatic payment methods, including Autopay and eBilling, will not automatically transfer to GFL.
  • To re-enroll in automatic payments and manage your GFL account, you will need to create a login for our online customer portal, MyAccount, at myaccount.gflenv.com. You will be able to do this starting July 1, 2021. Please note that you will not be able to link your account before this date. More information and step-by-step setup guidelines can be found on our website at gflenv.com/creating-your-myaccount/.
  • You have been provided with an expanded account number which is located at the top of the invoice enclosed with this letter. This account number will appear on all future invoices and can be used to create your new online account at myaccount.gflenv.com.
  • Once you’re set up in MyAccount, you’ll be able to easily manage your services, billing and payment preferences. If you have urgent questions regarding your balance, please contact your local GFL branch.
Further details to note:
  • On matters relating to service, pricing, contracts and partnerships, all operations will remain business as usual.
  • We’ll be ‘Going Green,’ so you’ll notice our look start to change over time. You’ll see the GFL logo and our signature green paint, our employees will get new uniforms and your invoices will feature GFL branding.
  • Though the company name and look will change, you can rely on us to continue delivering the safe, high-quality local service you’ve come to know from WCA. You’ll be served by a dedicated team of GFL professionals and you can contact us at the same local number for support.
  • Our online home will be transitioning to www.gflenv.com on July 1. If you need support, service information or any other details about GFL, this is where you’ll find them.

WCA/GFL WORK SPECIFICATION
  1. Regular collection days for all communities will be Tuesday and Friday. Household waste will be collected at the backdoor and or garage for the sections of the Association with backdoor and or garage service. The trash must be accessible and visible from the street, WCA/GFL personnel will not go behind any gates to access the household waste. Household waste will be collected at the curb for the sections of the Association with curbside service. All waste must be in place by 7 AM. Household waste must be either in containers or bags not exceeding sixty-four (64) gallons or fifty (50) pounds. Household garbage is defined as waste generated inside the house, exclusive of any construction or remodeling debris or any other waste defined in this Contract. Trees, shrubs and brush trimmings must be bundled in lengths no greater than four (4) feet with no branch diameter exceeding three (3) inches. The bundling is required to allow quick pick-up and size limitations are required to avoid damaging the equipment in the crushing process.
  2. Heavy trash or bulk items must be placed at the curbside by 7 AM every Tuesday and Friday. Small pieces of furniture, appliances, carpet (up to one room, rolled up to four feet wide and weigh less than fifty pounds) and cardboard boxes (flattened). By Federal Law, refrigerators, freezers or any other items containing Freon must be drained of Freon and have an accompanying bill to validate service was performed. Items excluded from normal collection are construction material, wood fencing, dirt, rocks, bricks, concrete, tires and batteries, motor oil, cooking oil, waste generated by a private contractor or any materials or items deemed hazardous materials. WCA/GFL will leave a tag explaining the reason for non-collected item(s). For a special collection of other than normal amounts or bulk items, if notified in advance, WCA/GFL will meet with a resident prior to collection day to determine a price. If a resident does not notify WCA/GFL of such a special pick-up before its scheduled day, then WCA/GFL will leave a notice for the resident to contact WCA/GFL during normal office hours before the next scheduled pick-up day.
  3. Household recycling must be placed at the curbside by 7 AM. WCA/GFL will collect residential recyclables located curbside in the eighteen (18) gallon bin or the forty-eight (48) gallon cart supplied by WCA/GFL. If a bin or cart needs to be replaced, contact customer service for delivery of a replacement bin or cart. Current items being collected are paper including newspaper, magazines, phone books, catalogs, junk mail, envelopes, file folders, computer paper, construction paper, colored paper, corrugated cardboard boxes (flattened and bundled) cereal and soda/beer boxes, gift boxes, wrapping paper; containers including aluminum cans, aluminum foil, plastic bottles/jugs/buckets #1 through #7, glass bottles or jars. Excluded Items are Styrofoam, metal pots and pans; scrap metal like nails; screws; gutters; and copper. If the market price for anyone (1) or all the commodities designated to be collected drop to the point that such materials can no longer be sold or processed, WCA/GFL will remove that item(s) from the list of those items to be recycled and notify the residents. WCA/GFL will communicate any changes in recycling to residents.
EASTON COMMONS: Recycling will be serviced on Friday.
NORTHMEAD: Recycling will be serviced on Friday.
SOUTHCREEK: Recycling will be serviced on Tuesday.
SOUTHDOWN: Recycling will be serviced on Tuesday.
WESTCREEK: Recycling will be serviced on Tuesday.
MIDDLEGATE: Recycling will be serviced on Friday.
 

COYOTES IN COPPERFIELD

Coyotes have been sighted in many of the subdivisions in the Copperfield area at night and before dawn. Please protect your pets. They should not be left unattended after dark, even in their own enclosed yard as coyotes can jump or scale a 6-7 ft fence.

CY-FAIR WOMEN’S CLUB

WOMEN SERVING THE COMMUNITY
CWC is a non-profit service organization that gives back to the Cy-Fair community. All the funds raised by the club are given to the community by way of scholarships for graduating high school seniors, grants at Lone Star College-CyFair and funds to other non-profits in our community as well.
 

Membership for the Cy-Fair Women’s Club is open to all ladies in Northwest Houston/Cypress neighborhoods. We always meet the first Thursday of the month at The Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress Rd. You can park at Entrance 2 and look for the directional signs to the meeting room. Our meetings begin with social time and refreshments at 6:15 PM, immediately followed by a program at 6:45 PM.

Our monthly meetings are not only educational and enjoyable, but they can also develop lasting friendships too. In addition, we have a social event and volunteer opportunities throughout the month as well.
