Janea’ Dennis Named Principal of Smith Middle School in CFISD
Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District has officially named Janea’ Dennis as the new principal of Smith Middle School, effective this summer. The announcement comes as longtime principal Becky Koop prepares to retire in June, concluding a remarkable chapter of leadership at the campus.
Dennis brings with her 17 years of experience in public education, much of it spent within CFISD. She currently serves as associate principal at Cypress Woods High School, a position she’s held since 2024. Her career reflects a steady progression through instructional and leadership roles that have built a foundation for this new step.
A Journey Through Education and Leadership
Dennis began her teaching career in 2001 as an English teacher at Aldine Eisenhower High School. She later moved to Cypress Ranch High School in 2011, where she wore multiple hats—including instructional coach, English department chair, and team lead. Her commitment to academic growth and teacher development led her to serve as director of instruction helping teacher at Cypress Lakes High School.
In 2018, Dennis transitioned into administration as assistant principal at Aragon Middle School, later returning to Cypress Ranch in the same role in 2022. Her most recent assignment as associate principal at Cypress Woods High School positioned her at the heart of campus operations and student success.

Dennis holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Houston and a Master of Science in Psychology from the University of Phoenix. She earned her Principal Certification from Lamar University and has participated in the CFISD Aspiring Principal Institute. She’s also served as a summer school principal and contributed to various district and campus committees over the years.
Embracing the Smith Middle School Community
As Dennis prepares to take the helm at Smith Middle School, she shared her excitement and commitment to upholding the school’s strong tradition of academic achievement and community involvement.
“I am beyond honored to join the amazing Smith Middle School community as principal,” Dennis said. “It’s a privilege to lead a campus with such a strong legacy, dedicated staff and an amazing student body. I look forward to forging relationships with students, staff, parents and the community, and continue the legacy of academic excellence!”
Her appointment was met with enthusiasm from the district, which praised Dennis’ dedication to instructional leadership and student-centered growth.
