Innovative Electrical Pre-Apprenticeship Program Empowers Career Growth

January 05 2024

A thoughtful partnership is set to energize the Houston employment landscape. Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM), alongside JP Morgan Chase & Co. and TRIO Electric, an electric construction company in Houston, have come together to launch an innovative 5-week Electrical Pre-Apprenticeship Training Course. The course is designed to equip those keen on entering the construction electrical trade with essential skills and certifications, offering a bright spark of opportunity for career progression.

Classes will be held at NAM's Harrell Family Opportunity Center from Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, where trainees will engage in a blend of video-based instruction and hands-on lab simulations. A unique element of this training is the inclusion of Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, empowering students with an immersive learning experience that transcends the traditional classroom setting.

The course covers a wide array of areas, including NEC regulations, OSHA guidelines, conduit bending, device fabrication and installation, and wire pulling. Upon completion, students will earn an OSHA 10 certification and a TDLR electrical apprentice license. Further elevating the value of the program, students will also have access to additional benefits including tools, boots, financial literacy training, and job placement opportunities.

The admission process does have specific criteria to ensure a high-caliber learning environment. According to NAM, applicants must be eligible to obtain a TDLR license, clear a drug test, and possess an intermediate level of English proficiency. All interested applicants must also attend NAM's job readiness orientation. Unfortunately, those with felony backgrounds will not be eligible for this program.
