Houston Repertoire Ballet Gears Up for Annual Nutcracker Performances at New Venue in Cypress
The Houston Repertoire Ballet (HRB) is poised to launch its 26th annual production of "The Nutcracker," kicking off its 29th season with a fresh approach that promises to captivate audiences. This year's performances will take place at the newly opened CFISD Visual and Performing Arts Center in Cypress on December 7 and 8.
Highlighting the production are an impressive lineup of professional guest artists. Léa Fleytoux and Jake Roxander, both from the American Ballet Theatre, will grace the stage as the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier, respectively. Fleytoux, who began her ballet training in Paris, has danced numerous roles in prestigious productions, including "Don Quixote" and "Swan Lake." Roxander, recognized for his rapid ascent in the ballet world, recently received the 2024 Dance Performance Honorarium from the Princess Grace Foundation and has performed lead roles in various classical pieces.
Quinton Brooks, making his debut as the Snow King, is a Ballet Center of Houston alumnus from Houston Ballet II, while Joseph Modlin, a seasoned performer in the Houston dance scene, will portray Herr Drosselmeyer. Together, these artists will bring a new level of artistry and professionalism to the classic holiday tale.

In preparation for this year's performance, HRB has invested $200,000 in stunning new sets designed by Ian Loveall in collaboration with Dallas Stage Scenery. This move to a state-of-the-art venue not only enhances the visual experience but also supports HRB's mission to elevate its productions while maintaining affordability for local audiences. The newly designed professional orchestra pit will allow HRB’s Company Orchestra, under the baton of Tarana Taylor, to provide a rich musical backdrop that complements the ballet's enchanting story.
Victoria Vittum, co-founder and current artistic director of HRB, expressed enthusiasm about the venue's potential: "The CFISD Visual and Performing Arts Center offers us a fantastic platform to showcase our production. We are committed to providing high-quality performances while keeping ticket prices accessible for our community."
Tickets for the performances range from $20 to $35, with discounts for children and seniors. The minimum recommended age for attendees is two, and due to fire regulations, lap seating will not be permitted.
HRB has also achieved success with its fundraising event, The Land of Sweets Soirée, which has already sold out for 2024. However, the company will not be able to conduct its community outreach program, The Nutcracker Experience, this season due to transportation challenges affecting Cy-Fair ISD. Nevertheless, HRB is optimistic about reinstating the program for its landmark 30th season in 2025.
Founded in 1995 by Victoria Vittum and Gilbert Rome, HRB has emerged as a premier pre-professional ballet company in the Houston area, dedicated to nurturing young talent and fostering a love for the art of dance. With a mission focused on providing the highest quality ballet instruction and performance experiences, HRB serves as a stepping stone for many dancers who have gone on to prestigious companies, including New York City Ballet and Miami City Ballet.
As HRB prepares for its upcoming performances, the combination of new sets, a prestigious venue, and an outstanding roster of guest artists highlights the company's commitment to excellence in ballet and its dedication to engaging the local community.
