Houston Food Bank Calls for Volunteers in Wake of Recent Storms
In the wake of the recent Derecho Storm and tornadoes, the Houston Food Bank is rising to the challenge of aiding in disaster relief efforts across the Greater Houston area. This vital community resource, dedicated to providing food for better lives since 1982, is calling for volunteers to lend a hand in these extraordinary times.
The Houston Food Bank provides access to 120 million nutritious meals in 18 counties through their community partners, including food pantries, soup kitchens, social service providers and schools. In crisis situations such as this, the food bank's mission takes on an amplified urgency as it helps to fill gaps on plates with a strong focus on healthy foods and fresh produce.
Volunteers will be instrumental in sorting and packing non-perishable foods and cleaning supplies, repacking dry food into family-sized bags, and packaging hot meals in their commercial kitchen. Shifts are available from Monday to Sunday with a significant call for volunteers during the 6-9 pm slots. Both individuals and groups, including children, are welcome to volunteer.
The volunteer work, which is taking place at their location on 535 Portwall Street, represents the critical role the Houston Food Bank plays in times of hardship. The organization not only provides necessary food supplies but also advocates for policy change and racial equity, promotes dialogue on ways to increase access to food, and offers services aimed at addressing the root causes of hunger.
