Houston Airports Employees Create FIFA World Cup 2026 Fan Experience at IAH and HOU

As millions of visitors arrive in Houston for FIFA World Cup 2026, the first impression many will have of the city won't be at NRG Stadium, a downtown hotel, or a fan festival—it will be at the airport.

To help showcase Houston's welcoming spirit, employee volunteers at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) have transformed portions of both airports into interactive FIFA World Cup 2026 fan zones, creating memorable experiences for travelers passing through the region during one of the busiest travel periods in Houston's history.

Houston Airports Puts Hospitality Front and Center During FIFA World Cup 2026

Located in the Terminal A Connector Gallery at IAH, the Houston Airports Fan Zone offers travelers an unexpected break from the typical airport routine. Visitors can test their skills at foosball tables and video game stations, spin a prize wheel, pose for photos in front of soccer-themed backdrops, and even use an AI-powered photo booth that transforms them into players representing their favorite national teams.

The activation launched June 12 and will remain open through July 5, with Houston Airports employees volunteering daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Similar fan experiences have also been installed at William P. Hobby Airport, ensuring travelers at both of Houston's commercial airports can take part in the celebration.

For many visitors, the fan zones serve as a reminder that Houston is one of 16 host cities across North America for FIFA World Cup 2026 and a gateway for fans traveling throughout the continent.

Employees Volunteer to Welcome the World

Behind the games, giveaways and photo opportunities is a large group of Houston Airports employees volunteering their time to create a welcoming atmosphere for travelers.

According to Houston Airports, the volunteer signup sheet filled in less than 24 hours, reflecting strong enthusiasm among employees from departments that do not typically interact directly with passengers.

“This is the part of airport work that a lot of people never get to see,” said Andrew Czobor, director of Customer Experience Programs for Houston Airports. “Some of our employees spend their days in IT, infrastructure, badging, planning, operations or administrative roles. They are critical to the passenger experience, but they may not always be face-to-face with passengers. The Houston Airports Fan Zone gives them a chance to see the impact of their work in real time.”

The initiative has brought together employees from across Houston Airports, including information technology, infrastructure, badging, operations, marketing and customer experience teams. Volunteers help travelers navigate attractions, distribute prizes and encourage families to stop and enjoy the experience before continuing their journeys.

“I could not believe how fast people raised their hands,” Czobor said. “And what makes it even more meaningful is that they are not stepping away from their responsibilities. They are balancing schedules, coordinating with supervisors and still getting their regular work done. That says a lot about the culture of Houston Airports.”

Creating a Memorable Passenger Experience

For airport officials, the goal extends beyond decorating terminals with World Cup-themed displays.

“We wanted passengers to feel like they had stumbled into something special,” said Simone Wilson, senior marketing specialist for Houston Airports. “Airports are busy, emotional places. People are trying to make flights, manage luggage, move with kids or meet loved ones. The Houston Airports Fan Zone gives them a moment to breathe, smile and feel Houston’s energy before they continue their trip.”

That focus on creating meaningful moments has resulted in travelers stopping for family photos, challenging each other at foosball tables, and taking home souvenirs that connect them to Houston's role in the global tournament.

“The goal was never just to decorate a terminal,” Wilson said. “The goal was to create a passenger moment. We wanted something visual, interactive and easy to enjoy, whether someone had 5 minutes or 30. When you see families stopping for photos or kids pulling their parents toward the foosball table, you know it is working.”

Houston Preparing for 4.5 Million World Cup Travelers

The fan zones are just one part of a broader effort as Houston Airports prepares for an estimated 4.5 million passengers traveling through IAH and HOU between June 12 and July 6 during FIFA World Cup 2026.

Houston Airports recently completed major improvements designed to support the influx of travelers, including the full opening of Terminal E at IAH, new concessions, upgraded restroom facilities, and expanded passenger amenities. New dining options such as Simone Biles Taste of Gold at IAH and Landry's Seafood House at HOU are helping showcase Houston's local flavor to visitors arriving from around the world.

Houston Airports also notes that team members collectively speak more than two dozen languages, helping international travelers navigate terminals, transportation options and airport services with confidence.

As a major international gateway, Houston offers nonstop air service to every FIFA World Cup 2026 host city, making the region a key connection point for fans traveling throughout North America.

What Happens After the World Cup?

While the FIFA World Cup 2026 fan zones are temporary, several elements will remain in use long after the tournament concludes.

Houston Airports plans to continue utilizing the oversized IAH and HOU display letters for future events and promotions. Officials are also exploring ways to keep the popular foosball tables and gaming stations available for travelers during future peak travel periods.

For Houston Airports employees, the project represents another example of staff stepping forward during important moments for the region.

“Our employees have stepped up again and again this year,” Czobor said. “They stepped up during the federal government shutdown. They stepped up during the opening of IAH Terminal E. Now they are stepping up to welcome passengers during the World Cup. Every time the airport has needed them, Houston Airports employees have answered.”

As Houston welcomes visitors from around the globe, those employee volunteers are helping ensure that travelers experience something more than an airport terminal—they experience Houston itself.
