Helping a Hero Welcomes Double Amputee Veteran to New Home in Bridgeland

November 08 2023

Today, Helping a Hero, Bass Pro Shops, Black Riffle Coffee Company, and Perry Homes welcomed home double amputee CPL Frank Fields just in time for Veterans Day.

While carrying out a mission in November 2006, Fields was severely injured by an explosive device (IEP)  blast in Iraq. Fields and his fellow soldiers were forced to fight for their lives when his truck became engulfed in flames. He jumped out of the vehicle and soon discovered that his legs were severely injured. After treatment at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fields began his road to recovery, facing the grief of the loss of his legs, being alone. and contemplating suicide. Fortunately. Fields made the commitment to live.

Since this life-altering experience, Fields has turned his tragedy into triumph as a powerful motivational speaker, becoming one of the top motivational speakers in the wounded warrior community. Determined to use his experiences in service of others, he is also a life coach and mentor to his fellow brothers in arms.

In March of this year, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to commemorate the start of construction on his specially adapted home.

"Do not let your circumstances define you, rather let them define what you will do," said Fields at the groundbreaking ceremony.

Located in Bridgeland, the home is specially adapted for Field's needs as a bilateral above the knee amputee, where he will live with his fiancee, Tawnee Gonzalez, and their new son. Gonzalez is the widow of Marine Sergeant Marty Gonzalez, who passed away December 2020 from injuries he sustained in the Iraq war more than a decade prior to his passing. On June 15, 2023, Frank and Tawnee welcomed their son, Frankie.

Construction of Fields' home is made possible by the 100 Homes Challenge, a special initiative through Helping A Hero in which Johnny Morris, founder of Bass Pro Shops, has pledged 25% of the cost to build the next 100 specially adapted homes for those severely injured in the Post 9-11 Global War on Terror. To learn more about Helping A Hero and explore ways you can contribute, please visit helpingahero.org
