Hays County Adopts $653.8 Million FY2027 Budget and $0.4097 Tax Rate
Road construction, county facilities, school resource officers and other local services are among the priorities funded in Hays County's newly adopted fiscal year 2027 budget, a spending plan shaped in part by the demands of continued population growth.
Following a Sept. 15 public hearing, the Hays County Commissioners Court voted 3-2 to adopt a property tax rate of $0.4097 per $100 of taxable valuation and a balanced FY2027 budget totaling $653,805,820. Hays County announced the adopted budget Sept. 21.
Where the $653.8 Million Goes
The overall budget includes $263,734,233 in operating funds, $55,005,689 in debt funds and $335,065,898 in construction funds. The large construction component includes capital infrastructure work such as roads and county facilities funded through bonds issued in FY2026.
The budget also creates or funds several positions tied directly to county services. Those include three school resource officers, an auto theft detective, a judicial services officer, a parks supervisor and an environmental health technician.
For residents, those line items are where an annual county budget becomes more tangible. They can translate into law enforcement staffing, park operations, court services, environmental health work and the road and facility projects residents encounter in their daily routines.
Growth Continues to Shape County Spending
Hays County has been investing heavily in transportation and public infrastructure as communities including Kyle, Buda, San Marcos and surrounding unincorporated areas continue to grow. The FY2027 plan reflects that pressure through its capital spending as well as new staffing.
The 3-2 vote also means the budget was not adopted unanimously. The county's announcement documents the final vote and spending plan without characterizing the differing policy views behind individual commissioners' votes.
