Hays County Activates Burn Ban Ahead of New Year’s Eve Celebrations
A recently activated burn ban remains in effect across Hays County and is expected to continue through January 20, 2026. Officials say the timing is critical as New Year’s Eve celebrations approach.
The NFPA reports that fireworks are responsible for a significant number of residential fires during holidays, particularly when drought conditions persist. In Central Texas, dry grasses and cedar can ignite quickly and spread fire beyond the original ignition point.
Sunset Oaks residents are encouraged to skip fireworks and consider safer traditions. Outdoor cooking is generally allowed when contained, but all flames should be carefully monitored.

For future celebrations when a burn ban is not in effect, it’s also important for residents to confirm whether fireworks are allowed in their neighborhood. HOA rules, city ordinances, and county regulations may differ, and in some municipalities, fireworks discharge is illegal.
Hays County officials continue to remind residents that preventing fires protects neighbors, property, and first responders during a busy holiday season.
