Austin’s Free Summer Playgrounds Program Gives Kids a Place to Learn, Play and Connect

Austin  /  Austin
July 06 2026

For Austin parents looking for free summer activities for children, the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department is offering a full-day program designed to keep young residents active, learning and connected while school is out.

The Summer Playgrounds Program is a free, drop-in program for children ages 5 to 12, running Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through July 31, 2026. The program brings structured recreation, educational activities, meals and opportunities for friendship to six parks across North, Central and South Austin.

For families balancing work schedules, summer expenses and the challenge of keeping children engaged, the program offers a practical community resource close to home. No advance registration is required, although a parent or guardian must register the child at the park on the first day of attendance and complete a participant waiver before the child can take part.

Free Summer Activities at Austin Parks

The Summer Playgrounds Program is built around the idea that neighborhood parks can be places for more than outdoor recreation. Each day combines physical activity, creative projects, teamwork and continued learning in a familiar community setting.

Participants may begin the morning with a group welcome before moving into arts and crafts through Totally Cool, Totally Art. Other activities include T.E.A.M. Time for collaborative play, introductory sports challenges such as kickball and dodgeball, and Einstein Time activities intended to help children continue practicing academic skills during the summer.

Children may also participate in swimming and Learn to Swim activities through a partnership with the Austin Parks and Recreation Aquatics Division. Water games and other cool-down activities are incorporated into the schedule during the hottest part of the season.

Visits from Austin Fire, Police, EMS, Watershed Protection, Development Services and other city departments give children an opportunity to learn about the people and services that help Austin operate.

The program is designed to promote healthy living, character development, teamwork, environmental education and age-appropriate learning while giving children time to simply enjoy being outdoors with their peers.

Austin Summer Playgrounds Locations

The free program is available at parks throughout the city:

The locations are distributed across North, Central and South Austin, making the program accessible to families in several parts of the city.

Lunch and Snacks Included for Participants

Children attending the Austin Summer Playgrounds Program receive morning and afternoon snacks. A partnership with the Central Texas Food Bank also allows the city to provide lunch to program participants.

That meal support can make a meaningful difference for families during the summer months, when students may not have access to the same school-based breakfast and lunch programs available during the academic year.

The combination of free meals, supervised recreation and learning activities gives families an option that supports children socially, physically and academically without adding another expense to the household budget.

How to Register for the Summer Playgrounds Program

Online registration ended May 22, but families can still register in person at a participating park during program hours. Registration is required at the park site on the child’s first day of attendance.

A participant waiver must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian before the child can attend. Waivers may be submitted at the park where the child is registered or emailed to SummerPlaygroundsProgram@austintexas.gov

Program forms and documents are available through the City of Austin’s Centralized Programs Documents webpage.

The Summer Playgrounds Program runs through Friday, July 31, 2026. Families should contact the program directly to confirm space, schedules and activity availability at individual locations.

For questions, call 512-974-3922 or email SummerPlaygroundsProgram@austintexas.gov

As Austin continues to grow, programs like Summer Playgrounds help ensure neighborhood parks remain welcoming places where children can build confidence, make friends and enjoy meaningful summer experiences.
