Harris County Sheriff's Office Junior Mounted Posse Prepares for 72nd Annual HLSR Relay Ride
The Harris County Sheriff's Office Junior Mounted Posse is all saddled up and ready to ride in the 72nd annual Relay Ride. This historic event, which has been a part of the fabric of our community for over seven decades, will once again deliver the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo proclamations to our neighbors in surrounding counties.
This year's relay rides are set to kick off bright and early on January 20. Riders will start at the Colorado County Courthouse in Columbus at 9:30 AM, heading west for their first relay ride covering 40 miles as they travel to City Hall in Weimar. The ride will conclude at the Lavaca County Courthouse in Hallettsville at 3:30 PM that afternoon. Along the way, riders and their horses will be given support by teams of Harris County Sheriff's Office sheriffs and volunteers, helping riders safely transition from one stop to the next.
Then on January 27, riders will be back in the saddle for the second relay ride of the year, starting off at 9:00 AM at the historic Train Depot in Tomball. From there, they'll make their way to Magnolia City Hall before concluding their ride to applause and cheers at the Grimes County Fairgrounds in Navasota at 4:00 PM.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office Junior Mounted Posse, the oldest youth mounted drill team in Texas and potentially the nation, is deeply rooted in tradition and community service. Their commitment to excellence is showcased each year when they take to the trails for the relay rides. As a nod to tradition, wooden batons and cowboy hats signed by sheriffs and other individuals at Commissioner's Court are carried by riders in one-mile increments
Planning and coordinating of the relay rides are carried out by the Harris County Sheriff's Office with the aid of dedicated volunteers, who work tirelessly to ensure the safety of the riders and their horses. Thanks to these efforts, the routes remain consistent each year, providing a smooth execution and a sense of familiarity to participants and spectators alike.
"The posse is so excited to be celebrating our 72nd Anniversary this year! Part of our yearly tradition is delivering Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo proclamations to surrounding counties. There are 4 new members of the posse that will be making their first relay rides this year. I'd love to see the community come out to support and cheer them on along our route," said Dalyn Bussey, lead drillmaster for the Posse and mom to one of the members.
The community is invited to meet the Junior Mounted Posse at the designated stops to show their support for this hard-working team of youth riders and they cause they ride for - the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
