Harris County Public Library's Book Buddies Program: Cultivating Young Readers and Community Connections This Fall

August 08 2024

This fall, local libraries are sowing seeds for the next generation of literature enthusiasts. The Harris County Public Library's Book Buddies program, a community initiative thoughtfully designed to kindle a love for reading among young children, has opened its doors for new volunteers at the LSC-CyFair Library location and is simultaneously inviting children to be a part of this enriching program at nearby branches.

Book Buddies is an innovative venture that converges the joys of reading and volunteerism. The program pairs trained volunteers or 'Big Buddies' with children in Kindergarten through 3rd grades, aptly called 'Little Buddies'. Over the course of 10 weeks, the 'buddies' convene for 45 minutes every week, immersing themselves in the captivating world of bibliographic narratives, one-on-one.

Currently, The LSC-CyFair Library is eager to welcome adult volunteers to assume the role of 'Big Buddies'. An 8th-grade reading proficiency in English and a completed background check, in the interest of the children's safety, are prerequisites for volunteers.

For youngsters residing near the LSC-CyFair Branch Library or the Northwest Branch Library, this program offers an opportunity to be a 'Little Buddy', have fun while learning, and cultivate a lasting affection for reading. It seeks to foster a bond between the child and their 'Big Buddy', who models reading skills and best practices.

Teens, from 7th to 12th grades, are also invited to volunteer as 'Big Buddies' at the Northwest Branch Library and contribute their share to this community initiative.

The backbone of this program, Harris County Friends of the Library (HCFOL), is a non-profit organization that tirelessly supports the activities of the Harris County Public Library System, ensuring its 26 branch libraries are equipped with the best programming, equipment, and resources available. From advocating for libraries and engaging in community outreach to supporting the annual Summer Reading Program and literacy programming, the HCFOL strives to amplify the impact of the Book Buddies program.
