Harris County Pets Hosts First-Ever Foster Training Workshop to Support Shelter Pets Seeking Forever Homes

February 11 2025

Harris County Pets is inviting animal lovers to its first-ever Foster Training Workshop, a free educational event designed to equip current and prospective foster caregivers with the tools needed to provide temporary homes for shelter animals. The workshop will take place on Saturday, February 22, from 11:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Harris County Pets, located at 612 Canino Road, Houston, TX 77076.

This event aims to address the urgent need for foster families in the Greater Houston area by providing attendees with expert guidance on animal behavior and socialization, basic pet care and health monitoring, and the many benefits of fostering. With limited space available, interested participants are encouraged to RSVP at foster@countypets.com to secure their spot.

The Growing Need for Pet Fosters in Harris County

According to data from the Veterinary Public Health Division of Harris County Public Health, as of January 2025, only 41 cats and 73 dogs were in foster homes, while 442 dogs and 51 cats remained in the shelter. By expanding its network of foster caregivers, Harris County Pets hopes to reduce shelter overcrowding and save more lives.

Fostering is a short-term commitment with a long-term impact. By welcoming a pet into their home, foster families help free up critical shelter space, ensuring that more animals receive the care they need.

The Life-Saving Benefits of Fostering

Fostering is not just an act of kindness—it’s a life-saving effort that provides countless benefits to both the animals and the people who care for them. According to the ASPCA, fostering offers the following advantages:

  • Provides a safe and healthy environment for animals in need: Many shelter animals require time to heal, grow, or receive extra care before finding their forever homes. Whether fostering tiny kittens or large dogs, caregivers give these animals the space, experiences, and resources they need to thrive.
  • Creates more space in shelters for other animals: Every animal placed in a foster home allows the shelter to dedicate more time and resources to incoming pets, improving overall care and increasing adoption rates.
  • Saves the lives of neonatal and “pee-wee” kittens: Kittens under eight weeks old require around-the-clock care to survive. Fosters trained to care for these vulnerable pets literally save their lives, helping them grow strong and healthy before adoption.
  • Expands adoption opportunities: Foster caregivers play a crucial role in helping pets find homes. By introducing their foster animals to friends, family, and social networks, they increase visibility and help match pets with potential adopters.
  • Adds joy and companionship to daily life: Fostering brings adorable companionship, heartwarming moments, and a sense of purpose. It’s an easy way to make a difference, and shelters provide everything needed to get started.

Who Can Foster?

Harris County Pets welcomes foster families from Harris, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller Counties. The shelter provides routine medical care at no cost, and fosters may also receive food, kennels, pee pads, and other essential supplies as needed.

Foster commitments are flexible—participants can foster for an afternoon, a weekend, or several weeks. Some fosters even choose to adopt their foster pets, a heartwarming outcome often referred to as “foster success.”

Responsibilities of a Foster Parent

Fostering a pet involves providing a safe and loving temporary home where they can feel secure and comfortable. Caregivers must ensure the pet has access to food, water, toys, and enrichment to support their physical and mental well-being. Regular exercise and socialization opportunities help the animal stay active and adapt to different environments. Foster parents are also responsible for monitoring medical and behavioral concerns, ensuring any issues are addressed promptly. Additionally, they must be able to transport the pet to necessary medical appointments, ensuring they receive proper veterinary care.

Animals selected for fostering are evaluated based on their age, behavior, and medical history, ensuring they are well-suited for temporary home environments.
