Harris County Issues Burn Ban Amid High Fire Risk: What Green Trails Estates Residents Need to Know

Harris County Issues Burn Ban Amid High Fire Risk: What Green Trails Estates Residents Need to Know

October 16 2025

With drought conditions persisting across the region, Harris County Commissioners Court has approved a countywide burn ban for all unincorporated areas—impacting communities like Green Trails Estates and beyond, effective Thursday, October 16, 2025. The decision comes in response to ongoing dry weather, warm temperatures, low humidity, and dry vegetation—an environment that creates the perfect storm for wildfires.

Currently, 151 counties across Texas are under burn bans, including Harris County’s neighbors: Fort Bend, Waller, Montgomery, Chambers, and Liberty counties. These widespread restrictions highlight the growing wildfire threat throughout the state.

What the Burn Ban Means for Green Trails Estates

The ban prohibits all outdoor burning unless it is fully contained within an enclosure that prevents sparks or flames from escaping. Here's what is allowed under the current order:

  • Outdoor burning approved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)
  • Approved ceremonial fires
  • Backyard cookouts and barbecues
  • Welding and “hot work” that follows Harris County fire code regulations

However, violation of the ban is a Class C misdemeanor—carrying a fine of up to $500. If a fire causes property damage, more serious charges such as Reckless Damage or even felony arson may apply.

Fireworks Restrictions During Diwali Sales

The burn ban also overlaps with the Diwali fireworks season, which began October 13 and runs through October 23. While fireworks sales are still permitted, certain types are now banned, including:

  • Skyrockets with sticks
  • Missiles with fins

These specific fireworks pose a higher risk of starting uncontrolled fires during dry weather. The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office (HCFMO) urges residents to leave fireworks displays to the professionals whenever possible.

“If you choose to use consumer fireworks, always read all caution labels, keep a water source nearby, and soak used fireworks thoroughly before disposal,” the HCFMO advises.

The HCFMO is committed to protecting life and property through fire prevention, investigation, education, emergency response, and management. Their ongoing mission is to support communities like Green Trails Estates in staying safe and informed—especially in high-risk seasons like this.

Tips to Prevent Fires in Dry Conditions

To help prevent wildfires in Green Trails Estates and surrounding areas, the county is encouraging residents to take extra precautions during any outdoor activity that could generate sparks or heat.

Grilling and Outdoor Cooking
  • Never place grills directly on dry grass or brush.
  • Never add lighter fluid to a burning grill.
  • Dispose of coals in a metal container soaked in water after grilling.
Cigarette Disposal
  • Never toss cigarettes or butts into dry grass, mulch, potted plants, or out of vehicle windows.
  • Use proper, non-combustible containers to extinguish and discard.
Vehicle and Lawn Equipment Safety
  • Avoid mowing dry grass or weeds—metal blades striking rocks can spark.
  • Don’t park on dry grass or brush—hot mufflers can ignite fires.
  • Ensure trailer safety chains don’t drag and spark while driving.

All Fires Start Small—Stay Alert

The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office reminds everyone: If you see an unattended or uncontrolled fire, call 9-1-1 immediately. Wildfires can spread rapidly in dry weather and pose serious danger to people, homes, pets, and the environment.

“Every action counts—whether it’s properly disposing of a cigarette or skipping fireworks this year,” said an HCFMO official. “It’s about protecting our neighbors and our shared community.”

Stay safe, Green Trails Estates—your awareness and cooperation make all the difference.
