H-E-B Donates $500,000 to Build Youth Basketball Courts Across Texas as Spurs Make Finals Run

As the San Antonio Spurs chase another championship, one of Texas’ most recognizable companies is making sure the excitement extends well beyond the basketball court.

H-E-B announced a $500,000 donation to Spurs Give, the official nonprofit arm of Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E), to fund the construction of youth basketball courts in underserved communities across Texas. The investment will support new courts in San Antonio, Austin, Brownsville, and Corpus Christi through the organization’s ongoing Spurs Play initiative, creating additional opportunities for young people to stay active, develop skills, and connect with their communities.

For families across Texas, the announcement represents more than a sports-related donation. Access to safe, quality recreational spaces remains a challenge in many neighborhoods, and community leaders often point to youth sports as a way to encourage physical activity, build confidence, and foster teamwork among young residents.

New Basketball Courts Planned for Texas Communities

The courts will be developed through the Spurs Play program, which focuses on expanding access to basketball and recreational opportunities for young people, particularly in areas where quality sports facilities may be limited.

“H-E-B is passionate about supporting children and families in Texas. We’re excited that this donation will help create more places for kids and young athletes to stay active and learn teamwork,” said Winell Herron, H-E-B Senior Vice President of Public Affairs, Diversity, and Environmental Affairs. “As the Spurs compete for another championship, we’re proud to support Spurs Give and their mission to provide Texas youth with more opportunities on the court.”

The investment comes at a time when many communities are seeking additional recreational amenities to serve growing populations and provide positive outlets for youth engagement. Public basketball courts often become gathering places that bring together neighbors, families, and local organizations while encouraging healthy lifestyles.

Spurs Finals Excitement Sparks Community Giveaways

In addition to the donation, H-E-B marked the Spurs’ Finals appearance with a series of customer surprises across San Antonio.

The San Antonio-based grocer purchased tickets to Games 1 and 2 of the NBA Finals and distributed them to selected customers at local stores throughout the week. Some shoppers also received free groceries and signed Spurs jerseys as part of the celebration.

“Spurs fans are some of the most passionate fans around, and as a longtime sponsor of the team, H-E-B was ready to surprise several lucky customers with tickets so they could be part of the action,” Herron added.

The giveaways reflected the long-standing connection between H-E-B and the San Antonio community, where both organizations have become deeply woven into the city’s identity.

A Partnership Focused on Youth Opportunities

Spurs Give leaders say the new courts will have impacts that reach beyond basketball.

“We are deeply appreciative of H-E-B for their generosity and partnership in our mission. Through our Spurs Play program, we’ve seen how access to quality play spaces can inspire the next generation to dream bigger,” said RC Buford, CEO of Spurs Sports & Entertainment.

Community recreation advocates frequently note that accessible sports facilities can help create environments where young people develop leadership skills, build friendships, and establish healthy habits that last into adulthood.

The planned courts are expected to serve thousands of children and families in the participating communities for years to come.

H-E-B’s Long History of Community Investment

The donation continues a long-standing tradition of philanthropy by H-E-B, which this year celebrates its 120th anniversary.

Founded in Kerrville and headquartered in San Antonio, H-E-B has grown into one of the largest privately held retailers in the United States. The company operates more than 455 stores across Texas and Mexico, serves millions of customers in more than 300 communities, and employs more than 175,000 Partners.

Beyond its grocery operations, H-E-B has built a reputation for community involvement through disaster response efforts, educational initiatives, hunger relief programs, environmental sustainability projects, and support for nonprofits throughout Texas.

The latest gift also coincides with the company’s 41st H-E-B Tournament of Champions, one of the nation’s largest charitable events benefiting organizations that serve Texas children and families.

Why This Matters for Texas Communities

While the Spurs’ Finals appearance has generated excitement among basketball fans, the new courts may prove to be one of the most enduring outcomes of the celebration.

For neighborhoods in San Antonio, Austin, Brownsville, and Corpus Christi, the investment means more accessible places for children to play, learn teamwork, and stay active. It also highlights how partnerships between businesses, nonprofits, and professional sports organizations can create community benefits that last long after the final buzzer sounds.

As construction plans move forward through the Spurs Play initiative, families across Texas will be watching to see how these new spaces help shape the next generation of athletes, leaders, and community members.
