Gruene Hall and Lone Star Beer Celebrate 190 Years of Texas Independence with Live Music, 190¢ Beer and Armadillo Races

February 26 2026

For Texans, March 2 is more than a date on the calendar — it marks the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence in 1836, when Texas declared its independence from Mexico and established the Republic of Texas. Nearly 190 years later, that independent spirit remains deeply woven into the state’s identity.

In New Braunfels, that spirit will take center stage at one of Texas’ most iconic venues. On Sunday, March 1, 2026, Gruene Hall and Lone Star Beer will host a full day of Texas Independence Day festivities, inviting residents and visitors to celebrate 190 years of Texas pride inside the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas.

For families across Comal County and the greater Central Texas region, the event offers more than live music and cold drinks — it’s a chance to step into living Texas history while celebrating the culture that continues to shape the state today.

A Texas Independence Day Tradition at Gruene Hall

Texas Independence Day has long been honored at Gruene Hall, a landmark that has been “gently resisting change since 1872.” Located within the 15-acre Gruene Historic District — designated as a National Historic District — Gruene Hall has served as a gathering place for generations of Texans.

Originally built in 1878, the dance hall has hosted some of the most recognizable names in Texas and Americana music while maintaining its original charm, wooden floors, and small-town character. The surrounding historic township buildings now house restaurants, boutiques, and shops, making Gruene a destination for visitors searching for authentic Texas culture near New Braunfels.

“Texas Independence Day has long been an important tradition at Gruene Hall,” said Susie Molak, wife of late founder Pat Molak. “For generations, it’s been a gathering place for Texans, and we look forward to honoring that legacy with a day filled with great music, unique Texas traditions, and a strong sense of community.”

What to Expect: Live Music, Armadillo Races and Texas-Sized Specials

The Texas Independence Day celebration at Gruene Hall begins at noon and continues through close, offering a full lineup of music, family-friendly activities, and Texas-themed experiences.

Live Music All Day at Gruene Hall

A lineup of Texas artists will take the stage beginning at 12:00 p.m.:

  • The Merles | 12:00–3:00 p.m.
  • Kix Garcia Band | 3:30–5:30 p.m.
  • Parker Ryan | 6:00–6:30 p.m.
  • Sundance Head | 6:45–8:15 p.m.

Live Texas country and Americana music remain central to Gruene Hall’s identity, and this year’s celebration continues that tradition with performances throughout the day.

Armadillo Races and Photo Opportunities

From 3:00–6:00 p.m., guests can gather in the Gruene Hall beer garden for one of the most talked-about traditions of the event — armadillo races. Equal parts unpredictable and entertaining, the races have become a fan favorite over the years.

Visitors can also capture Texas-themed photos with a live longhorn from 3:00–6:00 p.m., or pose with an old-time chuck wagon, available from 11:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. These iconic backdrops offer a snapshot of Texas heritage set against the historic dance hall.

Texas Vendor Market

From 11:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., a Texas Vendor Market will feature local artisans, vendors, and nonprofits offering Texas-made goods. The market highlights the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of the community, reinforcing Gruene’s reputation as a cultural hub in New Braunfels.

190¢ Beer Specials and Texas-Sized Dining Deals

In honor of 190 years of Texas Independence, select domestic longnecks will be available for 190 cents from 3:00 p.m. to close at Gruene Hall. Featured brands include Lone Star, Lone Star Light, Bud Light, Budweiser, Coors Banquet, Coors Light, Miller Lite and Yuengling. Organizers note that Gruene Hall does not make small change.

The Texas-sized celebration continues on Monday, March 2, with all-day specials throughout the Gruene Historic District:

  • $19.00 sizzlin’ fajitas for two at Cantina del Rio
  • $19.00 Texas-sized shrimp plate at Gristmill River Restaurant
  • 190¢ select domestic beer at Gruene Hall, Gristmill River Restaurant, Mozie’s, Cantina del Rio and The Grapevine (beer selection varies by location)
  • 19.0% off purchases of $19.00 or more at participating shops including Cosmic Plant Company, Dancing Bear, Gruene Boot Company, Gruene General Store, Gruene Hat Company, Red & Gruene, and Texas Dirt Road Salvage

For many local families and visitors planning a Texas Independence Day celebration near New Braunfels, the combination of live entertainment, dining specials, and shopping promotions makes the historic district a full-day destination.

Why Texas Independence Day Still Matters

Texas Independence Day commemorates March 2, 1836, when delegates signed the Texas Declaration of Independence at Washington-on-the-Brazos. The document formally declared Texas a sovereign nation, setting the stage for the Republic of Texas and, eventually, statehood.

Today, the holiday serves as a reminder of Texas’ distinctive history, culture and identity — values reflected in gatherings like the one at Gruene Hall. The celebration blends music, food, local businesses, and community connection in a setting that has witnessed nearly a century and a half of Texas history.

For longtime residents of New Braunfels and first-time visitors alike, the event offers a way to experience Texas Independence Day not just as a historical milestone, but as a living tradition.

As March approaches, Gruene Hall once again opens its doors for a celebration rooted in music, memory and Lone Star pride — a reminder that while Texas has changed over 190 years, its independent spirit continues to bring people together.
