GOYA Cares Founder Robert 'Bob' Unanue Awarded Spain’s Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic

April 03 2025

Robert “Bob” Unanue, the former CEO of Goya Foods and founder of the social initiative GOYA Cares, was recently honored with one of Spain’s highest civilian distinctions—the Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic. The award was presented on March 20 in Washington, D.C., by Spanish Ambassador to the United States Ángeles Moreno Bau, who spoke about the importance of the long-standing relationship between Spain and the U.S.

Created in 1815, the Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to promoting Spain’s international relations. Unanue was awarded the title of Commander, a ceremonial role symbolizing his cultural and philanthropic ties to Spain.

“It is an immense privilege and honour to receive this award,” Unanue said. “While I bleed red, white, and blue, I cannot forget my roots, and Spain has always been like a second home to me.”

Carrying on his family legacy, Unanue led Goya Foods for more than two decades, helping expand the company into a major player in the international food industry. Goya’s U.S. headquarters is located in Jersey City, New Jersey, with major facilities across the country and internationally, including Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Spain.

One of Goya’s most important local operations is in Brookshire, Texas, just west of Katy. The facility, which opened in 2011, employs approximately 250 local workers and plays a major role in food distribution throughout the Southwest. In 2020, Goya announced plans to invest $80 million in expanding the Brookshire location to double production capacity—an economic boost for Waller County and the surrounding area.

Though Unanue’s leadership role with Goya came to an uncertain pause earlier this year following a board decision, his advocacy work continues. Through GOYA Cares, Unanue has focused on raising awareness around child trafficking, and he recently served as executive producer of the film Sound of Freedom, which brought renewed public attention to the issue.

“I will not be silenced,” Unanue said earlier this year. “We cannot remain passive spectators while soulless, despicable animals treat children with callous indifference.”

While the Royal Order may be rooted in centuries-old tradition, the issues Unanue is focused on—economic development, cultural connection, and child safety—remain as relevant as ever.
