From Medina Valley Volleyball to Pediatric Nursing: Mother and Daughter Reunite at San Antonio Hospital
Some family traditions have a way of coming full circle. For Medina Valley High School graduates Lynsie Crow and her daughter, Kyla Solis, a shared love of volleyball eventually led to something neither could have experienced together on the court: working alongside one another as nurses caring for children at Methodist Children’s Hospital in San Antonio.
Crow, a 1997 Medina Valley High School graduate, has spent 26 years at the hospital, building a career in pediatric nursing. Her daughter, a member of the Class of 2021, recently became a registered nurse at the same hospital, where she now cares for critically ill children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
Their story, recently featured in a Medina Valley Independent School District (MVISD) Alumni Spotlight, offers a meaningful glimpse at how two generations of Medina Valley graduates followed remarkably similar paths, from high school athletics to college volleyball and ultimately into careers devoted to helping children and families through some of their most difficult moments.
A Medina Valley High School Athlete Who Found Her Calling in Nursing
Long before Crow began caring for young patients, she was a three-sport athlete at Medina Valley High School, where volleyball became an important part of her life.
After graduating in 1997, she continued playing volleyball at the collegiate level before pursuing a nursing degree at San Antonio College.
That decision eventually brought her to Methodist Children’s Hospital, where she has spent more than two decades working with pediatric patients and their families.
Today, Crow serves as a Pediatric Registered Nurse focused on patient experience, a role that draws on her years of nursing experience and her understanding of what families face when their children need hospital care.
Over the course of her 26-year career, Crow has witnessed countless moments that come with working in pediatric healthcare. Now, she has the opportunity to share that professional world with someone who grew up watching her dedication to nursing firsthand.
Following in Her Mother's Footsteps, From Volleyball to Healthcare
For Kyla Solis, growing up with a mother who was both a former collegiate athlete and a pediatric nurse provided an example of two very different but equally demanding pursuits.
Like her mother, Solis became a dedicated volleyball player at Medina Valley High School, competing on the varsity team for all four years before graduating in 2021.
Her athletic career continued beyond Medina Valley when she played college volleyball at Clemson University and the University of North Florida.
Solis earned a bachelor's degree in health science before pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at UT Health San Antonio.
Although their educational journeys took them to different colleges and universities, both women ultimately chose nursing careers centered on helping children.
In 2025, while still attending nursing school, Solis joined Methodist Children’s Hospital as a Patient Care Technician, gaining experience in the same hospital where her mother had spent much of her professional life.
In September 2026, she reached another milestone when she became a registered nurse.
Now Working at Methodist Children's Hospital, Mother and Daughter Share a Career
Today, Solis works in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Methodist Children’s Hospital in San Antonio, where nurses care for children facing critical illnesses and serious medical conditions.
The PICU is a specialized hospital unit for young patients who require close monitoring, advanced treatment and intensive nursing care. It is a demanding environment where healthcare professionals also work closely with families navigating uncertain and often stressful circumstances.
According to the MVISD Alumni Spotlight, Solis finds purpose in helping children, a commitment that connects her work to the career her mother began more than two decades earlier.
Although Crow and Solis have different nursing responsibilities, both now work at the same hospital, sharing a profession that requires compassion, patience and a willingness to care for others.
For Crow, having her daughter join the hospital's nursing staff has added an unexpected personal dimension to a career she has spent 26 years building.
As she shared in the district's alumni feature, "getting to share our careers makes it even more special."
What began as a shared interest in volleyball has become a connection that extends into their professional lives, giving the mother and daughter a new way to support and learn from one another.
A Full-Circle Moment for Medina Valley ISD Alumni
For families in Castroville and the surrounding Medina Valley ISD communities, Crow and Solis represent two generations of graduates who took lessons learned through high school athletics into their adult lives.
Their experiences also highlight the different routes students can take toward a healthcare career. Crow pursued nursing through San Antonio College after playing collegiate volleyball, while Solis earned a health science degree, continued her education at UT Health San Antonio and began working in a hospital before completing nursing school.
Both paths eventually led to Methodist Children's Hospital, a San Antonio pediatric hospital that provides specialized medical care for children throughout the region.
For current Medina Valley High School students considering careers in nursing, medicine or other healthcare professions, their story provides a local example of how interests developed in school can remain part of a person's life long after graduation.
And for student-athletes, it is a reminder that the determination, teamwork and commitment required in competitive sports can carry into professions where working together is equally important.
Two Generations, One Shared Purpose
There is something especially meaningful about a daughter choosing a profession she watched her mother practice for much of her life.
For Crow, the opportunity to work at the same hospital as Solis means seeing her daughter begin a nursing career of her own. For Solis, it means starting that career in a place where her mother has already devoted more than a quarter-century to caring for children.
Their story is not simply about following in someone's footsteps. It is also about building an individual path while maintaining a connection to the people and experiences that helped shape it.
From the volleyball courts of Medina Valley High School to the halls of Methodist Children's Hospital, Crow and Solis have found themselves on the same team once again, this time with a shared commitment to caring for young patients.
For Medina Valley ISD, their journey is a reminder that the stories of its graduates continue well beyond the classroom, often reaching into the lives of families throughout the greater San Antonio community.
