Freeman High’s Andrew Hohmann Makes History—and Inspires a New Era in Katy ISD Athletics

November 06 2025

In just its first year of varsity competition, Freeman High School in Katy ISD is already making history—thanks in large part to the determination and drive of sophomore Andrew Hohmann.

With laser focus and a quiet confidence, Hohmann became the first male athlete from the newly opened campus to qualify for the UIL Class 4A State Cross Country Championship. His historic run capped off a season of grit and growth, marking a milestone not only for him personally, but for the entire Freeman Golden Eagles athletic program.

“My personal goal was to make it to state this year, and I did that,” said Hohmann. “It felt awesome, but there’s also a little bit of pressure. You want to make sure you perform your best.”

And perform he did. Hohmann finished in the top 40 among the state’s most elite competitors—a powerful statement for a sophomore leading a first-year program. Behind the scenes, his dedication had been relentless.

“He trained all summer on his own,” said Freeman Cross Country Coach Tony Brillon. “When he came into that first race, I knew he hadn’t missed a single day. That’s every coach’s dream. He’s competitive and driven. You can tell when an athlete is locked in—and Andrew always is.”

But Hohmann’s journey to state wasn’t just about athletic excellence. Known by teachers and peers for his academic and extracurricular involvement, he also sings in choir, competes with the Academic Decathlon team, and juggles Advanced Placement and upper-level coursework.

His secret? A work ethic modeled after his dad, a corporate team leader whose example helped him understand resilience in the face of pressure.

“I’ve learned a lot from him because his job is very demanding,” Hohmann said. “Watching how he handles challenges taught me to work through hard things—whether physical, mental or emotional.”

The Freeman community, nestled within the ever-growing Katy Independent School District, is still in its infancy. Yet students like Hohmann are already laying the foundation for a tradition of excellence. Coach Brillon noted that Hohmann’s leadership started long before the starting gun of the first meet.

“He’s a hard worker, and not just in cross country. He can compartmentalize things quickly,” Brillon added. “I don’t have to motivate him.”

With a dream of running collegiately at Brigham Young University and a budding interest in chemistry, Hohmann’s path is still just beginning. But even now, his impact is undeniable.

“When people think of me, I want them to say I was someone who kept trying, kept pushing and got better because of it,” Hohmann said. “And I hope that inspires others to do the same.”

As Freeman High School continues to grow in both size and spirit, trailblazers like Andrew Hohmann remind the Katy community what’s possible when determination meets opportunity—and why the future of Golden Eagles athletics is already shining bright.
