Free Pet Microchipping Event at CAP Offers Peace of Mind for West Memorial Residents Ahead of July 4th
In recognition of National Microchipping Month, Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP) is hosting a Free Microchipping Event for Houston-area pet owners on Wednesday, June 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the CAP Cornelius Clinic, located at 17555 Katy Freeway, Building C, Houston, TX 77094, just a short drive from West Memorial. The event is walk-in only and will serve the first 100 dogs and cats, offering both microchipping and complimentary registration at no cost.
This initiative is part of CAP’s ongoing mission to protect pets and keep families together. With Fourth of July fireworks approaching—a common cause of pet escapes—the event couldn’t come at a better time for West Memorial residents looking to safeguard their furry family members.
“Collars can slip off and tags can fade or get lost, but a microchip is a lasting form of identification,” said Sandi Mercado, Executive Director at CAP. “It’s quick, it’s safe, and it could be what reunites you with your pet if they ever go missing.”
Why Microchipping Matters—Especially Now
Every June, National Microchipping Month reminds pet owners of the importance of permanent identification. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), microchipped pets are significantly more likely to be returned home if lost—up to 20 times more for dogs and over 38 percent more for cats compared to non-chipped pets.
As of recent updates to Houston city ordinances, microchipping is also legally required for all pets over four months of age, making this free event not only timely but also a convenient opportunity for pet owners to stay compliant.

“Microchipping is such a simple step that has such a powerful impact,” said Mercado. “It’s one of the easiest ways to protect your pet—and it’s now the law.”
