Fort Bend County Libraries Hosts Free Financial Literacy Classes for Teens in 2025

Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) is hosting a series of free financial literacy workshops for teens in 2025, aimed at helping high school students build essential skills for managing money. Designed for students in grades 9 through 12, these classes cover topics like budgeting, credit management, and understanding credit cards and insurance.

The workshops are led by Fort Bend County Extension Agent Janelle Johnson and take place monthly at three FBCL locations: Mission Bend Branch Library in Houston, George Memorial Library in Richmond, and Missouri City Branch Library. Each session is repeated at all three locations to accommodate varying schedules.

Financial Literacy Workshop Schedule

January: Budgeting 101

This session teaches students how to create a budget, track income and expenses, prioritize spending, and save for goals.

  • Monday, January 13: Mission Bend Branch Library, 5:00-6:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, January 15: George Memorial Library, 4:00-5:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, January 16: Missouri City Branch Library, 4:00-5:00 p.m.

February: Credit Management

Learn how credit cards, loans, and credit scores work, and discover strategies to manage credit responsibly while avoiding debt.

  • Monday, February 3: Mission Bend Branch Library, 5:00-6:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, February 19: George Memorial Library, 4:00-5:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, February 20: Missouri City Branch Library, 4:00-5:00 p.m.

March: Introduction to Credit Cards

This deeper dive into credit cards covers how they function, tips for responsible usage, and ways to prevent debt.

  • Monday, March 3: Mission Bend Branch Library, 5:00-6:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, March 19: George Memorial Library, 4:00-5:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, March 20: Missouri City Branch Library, 4:00-5:00 p.m.

April: Insurance Basics

Students will explore various types of insurance, including health, auto, and renters’ insurance, and their role in financial security.

  • Monday, April 7: Mission Bend Branch Library, 5:00-6:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, April 16: George Memorial Library, 4:00-5:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, April 24: Missouri City Branch Library, 4:00-5:00 p.m.

How to Register

The workshops are free and open to the public, but registration is required. Teens can sign up online at the FBCL website by navigating to “Classes & Events” and selecting their desired program and date.
