Fort Bend County Gardening Events Bring Plant Swaps, Native Plant Workshops and Expert Tips to Local Libraries This June

As gardening continues to gain popularity across Texas neighborhoods, Fort Bend County Libraries is offering residents in The Points several opportunities this June to learn new techniques, exchange plants and connect with fellow gardening enthusiasts through a series of free community events.

Whether someone is a longtime gardener with raised beds in the backyard, a first-time apartment grower experimenting with herbs on a patio, or simply curious about Texas native plants, the upcoming programs are designed to make gardening more approachable, educational and community-driven.

The lineup includes a plant swap at Cinco Ranch Branch Library, a soilless gardening workshop and native plant presentation at George Memorial Library, and a Texas Superstars class hosted by Fort Bend Master Gardeners at Fulshear Branch Library.

For many families in The Points, gardening has become more than a hobby. It offers a practical way to spend time outdoors, teach children about nature, reduce grocery costs and create greener, more welcoming outdoor spaces at home. According to the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, moderate estimates indicate that one out of every three families maintains some type of home garden, with many located in urban areas.

Plant Swap at Cinco Ranch Branch Library Encourages Community Connections

One of the most anticipated events is the Plant Swap taking place June 6 from 10 a.m. to noon at Cinco Ranch Branch Library in Katy.

Plant swaps have become increasingly popular because they allow gardeners to exchange mature plants, cuttings and bare-root plants while sharing advice, experiences and growing techniques with neighbors. The event is open to gardeners of all experience levels, and any pest-free plant is welcome.

The event is strictly a trading event, meaning no monetary transactions will be allowed inside the library. Organizers say the goal is to foster connection and collaboration among local plant lovers while helping residents diversify their home gardens in an affordable way.

The Cinco Ranch Branch Library is located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd, Katy, TX 77494. Residents can call 281-395-1311 for additional information.

Soilless Gardening Workshop Offers Modern Solutions for Small Spaces

Residents in The Points looking for alternative gardening methods may be especially interested in the Soilless Gardening workshop happening June 9 from 9 to 11 a.m. at George Memorial Library in Richmond.

Led by Prairie View A&M University Extension Agent Dr. Abdul Hakeem, the workshop will introduce participants to hydroponics and coco coir cultivation techniques that allow plants to grow without traditional soil.

Soilless gardening has become increasingly attractive for urban gardeners and homeowners seeking lower-maintenance or space-saving solutions. The workshop will also include practical tips, resource guides and hands-on learning opportunities designed to help both beginners and experienced gardeners develop productive growing systems at home.

Organizers note that these methods can offer more precise control over nutrients and water usage while supporting sustainable crop production.

Native Texas Plants Workshop Highlights Local Ecology

On June 17 from 10 to 11 a.m., George Memorial Library will also host the Native Plants of Texas workshop led by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service County Extension Educator Gabrielle Butler.

The session will explore Texas native wildflowers, trees, landscaping plants and even poisonous plants, helping residents better understand the natural environment surrounding their neighborhoods.

For homeowners across Fort Bend County, native plants have become increasingly appealing because they are often more drought tolerant, adaptable to Texas weather conditions and supportive of pollinators and local wildlife.

The George Memorial Library is located at 1001 Golfview Dr, Richmond, TX 77469. More information is available by calling 281-342-4455.

Fort Bend Master Gardeners to Present “Texas Superstars” Program in Fulshear

Gardeners wanting guidance on plants that consistently perform well in Texas conditions can attend the Texas Superstars lecture on June 27 from 3 to 4 p.m. at Fulshear Branch Library.

The presentation will be led by Fort Bend Master Gardeners, trained volunteers who work with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service to promote research-based horticultural practices throughout the community.

During the session, attendees will learn about the “Texas Superstars” designation, which identifies plants that have successfully endured extensive statewide trials for adaptability, durability and performance in Texas climates. The program includes information about annuals, perennials, shrubs, roses, trees and edible plants, along with characteristics such as pollinator friendliness and deer resistance.

The Fulshear Branch Library is located at 6350 GM Library Rd, Fulshear, TX 77441. Residents can call 346-481-6800 for additional details.
