Fighting Child Hunger Starts in the Kitchen: San Antonio Food Bank's Summer Meals Program Serves Hope Across Southwest Texas

For thousands of children across Southwest Texas, summer vacation doesn't just mean a break from the classroom—it can also mean losing reliable access to daily meals.

That's why the San Antonio Food Bank's Summer Meals for Kids campaign has become one of the region's most important seasonal initiatives. Running through August 8, the program is providing no-cost meals, groceries, and support services to families while working to close an estimated 20 million meal gap created when school cafeterias close for the summer.

Behind that effort is a bustling community kitchen where chefs, dietitians, staff, volunteers, educators, donors, and community partners work together each day to ensure children have access to nutritious meals close to home.

For Chef Geronimo Lopez, Executive Vice President of Culinary Operations at the San Antonio Food Bank, the mission is deeply personal.

Before joining the organization, Lopez admired its impact from the outside. Today, he helps oversee the preparation and distribution of more than 5,000 meals every day to more than 100 Summer Meals Sites throughout Southwest Texas.

More Than Preparing Meals

"When school is out, the meals many children depend on each day disappear," Lopez said. "Summer changes everything."

For families already facing financial hardship, the months between school years can quickly become one of the most difficult times of the year.

"What I have seen firsthand is this," Lopez said. "When we remove the worry of where a child's next meal will come from, we give them the freedom to simply be a kid. They can play, grow, and dream about what is possible."

That philosophy shapes everything happening inside the Food Bank's kitchens.

Each meal is developed alongside registered dietitians, tested by culinary professionals, and prepared by teams of staff members and volunteers focused on delivering meals that are both nutritious and appealing to children.

"This is more than a production effort," Lopez said. "It is a commitment to consistency."

For children experiencing food insecurity, knowing that breakfast or lunch will be available every day can provide an important sense of stability during an otherwise uncertain season.

The quality of those meals matters just as much.

"We focus on nutrition, but also on flavor," Lopez said. "We want children to enjoy what they are eating, to experience new foods, and to feel cared for in every bite."

Free Summer Meals Available Across Southwest Texas

The San Antonio Food Bank is partnering with schools, public libraries, parks, community centers, and other neighborhood organizations to operate more than 100 Summer Meals Sites across its service area.

Children 18 years old and younger can receive free breakfast, lunch, and snacks at participating locations with no registration or identification required.

Families can search for the nearest Summer Meals Site by entering their ZIP code at safoodbank.org/summermeals/getmeals.

In addition to ready-to-eat meals for children, the Food Bank also offers free grocery distributions that provide pantry staples, fresh produce, and protein to help families prepare healthy meals at home.

The organization also connects families with longer-term resources, including assistance applying for SNAP, WIC, and Medicaid benefits, as well as workforce training programs in culinary arts, logistics, and other career fields designed to build greater financial stability.

How the Community Can Help

While the Summer Meals for Kids campaign is focused on serving children, its success depends on community support.

Every $1 donated helps provide 14 meals through the San Antonio Food Bank's hunger relief programs.

Residents can also support the campaign by:

  • Making a monetary donation online, by phone, in person, or by mail.
  • Organizing a neighborhood, workplace, school, or church food drive.
  • Donating non-perishable food items.
  • Volunteering in the Community Kitchen, food distributions, gardens, or warehouses.
  • Sharing information about the Summer Meals for Kids campaign on social media to help families learn where free meals are available.

Volunteer opportunities are available for individuals, families, community groups, and businesses, with the greatest need occurring throughout the busy summer months.

Why This Matters for Our Communities

More than 200,000 children in Southwest Texas rely on free or reduced-price school meals during the academic year. When summer begins, many families are left filling the gap on already stretched budgets.

The San Antonio Food Bank's Summer Meals for Kids campaign helps ensure children can continue learning, growing, and enjoying summer without worrying about where their next meal will come from.

As Chef Lopez and his team prepare thousands of meals each day, their work reflects something much larger than food production—it represents a community coming together so every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Because while fighting child hunger may start in the kitchen, its impact reaches neighborhoods, classrooms, playgrounds, and families across Southwest Texas.
