Fairfield 4-H Club Offers Cypress Youth Hands-On Learning and Leadership Through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension

April 23 2025

For families in Cypress, Texas, looking to enrich their children’s education beyond the classroom, the Fairfield 4-H Club offers a unique, hands-on learning opportunity that emphasizes leadership, responsibility, and real-world skill development.

Meeting every first Monday of the month at 7:00 PM at Good Shepherd Methodist Church in Cypress, the Fairfield 4-H Club is open to children in grades K–12, with specific programs for both younger children (Clover Kids, K–2nd grade) and full 4-H membership starting in 3rd grade. Managed by Kelley Fisher, the club is part of the broader Texas 4-H Youth Development Program, which operates under the umbrella of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

What Is 4-H? A Legacy of Learning by Doing

The 4-H program—named for its core values of Head, Heart, Hands, and Health—is the largest youth development organization in the country, with a rich history in Texas. Originating in 1908, 4-H began as a way to teach young Texans innovative farming techniques. Today, it reaches over 55,000 youth across Texas through local clubs, with an additional 600,000 reached through educational outreach.

In Harris County, 4-H continues that mission by connecting young people with adult mentors and giving them the tools to explore agriculture, science, technology, public speaking, and entrepreneurship, all while contributing positively to their communities.

What Fairfield 4-H Offers to Cypress Families

Fairfield 4-H Club is more than just a community gathering—it’s a place where young people can discover their passions and gain confidence through guided project-based learning. Through 4-H projects, students participate in a series of at least six structured learning experiences, each lasting 20 to 60 minutes, while also developing leadership skills, engaging in community service, and showcasing their work through exhibitions and competitions.

Current Texas-approved 4-H project areas include:

  • STEM, Robotics, and Horticulture

  • Dog Care and Training, Veterinary Science, and Livestock

  • Fashion Design, Consumer Education, and Public Speaking

  • Photography, Shooting Sports, and Youth Entrepreneurship

Whether your child wants to learn how to grow vegetables, code a robot, prepare a meal, raise an animal, or lead a presentation, Fairfield 4-H has a track that can match their interests.

Why Join 4-H? The Lasting Benefits for Kids

According to research from Tufts University, youth involved in 4-H programs are nearly four times more likely to contribute to their communities, twice as likely to make healthier lifestyle choices, and more likely to engage in STEM programs outside of school. In addition, 4-H participants tend to demonstrate stronger leadership skills, have higher educational aspirations, and exhibit greater self-confidence—qualities that benefit not only the individual but also their families, schools, and communities.
