As hospitals across the Houston region prepare for the seasonal challenges that often come with summer blood shortages, a local Katy organization is stepping forward to help ensure lifesaving blood products remain available for patients in need.

The Knights of Columbus at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Community will host a community blood drive in partnership with Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center on Saturday, June 7, 2026, giving residents in The Lakes and cross the Katy community an opportunity to directly support local hospitals and families facing medical emergencies, surgeries, cancer treatments, and traumatic injuries.

The drive will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside the Epiphany of the Lord PAC Building, located at 1530 Norwalk Dr, Katy, TX 77450.

For many families across the Greater Houston area, donated blood becomes critical during moments they never expect. A single accident victim may require dozens of units of blood, while patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplants, or complicated surgeries often rely on a stable blood supply to survive. Community blood drives like this one help maintain that safety net for local hospitals every day.

“Just one donation can help save multiple lives,” said Mike Edwards, Council 9759 Blood Drive Leader. “This is an opportunity for our community to come together and make a real difference for patients and families throughout our area.”

Why Blood Donations Matter in Katy and Greater Houston

Summer months are traditionally among the most difficult periods for blood centers nationwide. School breaks, vacations, and changing routines often lead to fewer donations at the same time hospitals continue caring for patients around the clock.

That challenge is especially important in fast-growing communities like Katy and West Houston, where expanding populations continue increasing demand for healthcare services.

According to Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood. Yet blood cannot be manufactured — it can only come from volunteer donors.

One blood donation has the potential to help multiple patients because whole blood can often be separated into red cells, plasma, and platelets for different medical uses. Trauma victims, premature infants, burn patients, and people battling chronic illnesses may all depend on donated blood products at different stages of treatment.

For residents who may wonder whether one donation truly matters, healthcare professionals consistently say the answer is yes.

About Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center

Founded in 1975, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center has served the Greater Houston area for decades as one of the region’s primary providers of blood products and transfusion services. The nonprofit organization supplies blood to more than 170 hospitals and healthcare facilities across a large portion of Southeast Texas.

The organization also operates mobile blood drives, donor centers, and community outreach programs designed to keep local blood supplies stable during emergencies and routine medical care alike.

In recent years, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center has played a significant role during hurricanes, severe weather events, and public health crises affecting the Houston region. During emergencies, maintaining local blood inventories becomes even more important because blood products have limited shelf lives and cannot be stockpiled indefinitely.

Community partnerships with churches, schools, civic groups, and local organizations remain one of the most effective ways to encourage consistent donations throughout the year.

Knights of Columbus Continue Community Service Tradition

The Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization known for its charitable and community service efforts, has long supported initiatives focused on helping families and neighbors in need.

Through projects ranging from food drives and scholarship programs to disaster relief and healthcare support, local councils often serve as community partners during times when practical assistance can make a meaningful difference.

Hosting blood drives has become one way organizations like the Knights of Columbus help strengthen local healthcare resources while encouraging residents to support one another through simple acts of service.

For many donors, blood drives also offer a tangible way to contribute locally, knowing their donation may directly benefit someone receiving treatment in a nearby hospital.

What Donors Should Know Before the June 7 Blood Drive

Appointments for the June 7 blood drive may be scheduled in advance through Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center’s donor portal, although walk-in donors will also be accepted as space allows.

Donors are encouraged to eat a healthy meal beforehand, stay hydrated, and bring a valid photo ID to the appointment.
