Katy High School Softball Claims 2026 UIL State Championship, Cementing Dynasty With Third State Title in 11 Years
For a community that has grown accustomed to athletic excellence, the Katy Tigers softball team delivered another chapter worthy of celebration.
Katy High School captured the 2026 UIL 6A Division II State Championship on June 1, defeating Forney 7-2 at McCombs Field in Austin and securing the program’s third state title in the past 11 years. The victory capped an extraordinary season that saw the Tigers finish 39-5 overall while riding a 22-game winning streak into the championship celebration.
As the final out was recorded, a sea of red erupted from the stands. A perfectly timed pitch from freshman standout Haley Schmitt and a quick throw from catcher Maddie Smith to first base sealed the championship, sending players, coaches and supporters into celebration as another state trophy headed back to Katy.
For a district known statewide for athletic success, the accomplishment further reinforces Katy High School’s reputation as one of Texas’ most consistent and respected programs.
A Championship Season Built on Balance and Power
The Tigers entered the postseason as one of the most complete teams in Texas high school softball, combining dominant pitching with an offense that overwhelmed opponents throughout the year.
Freshman pitcher Haley Schmitt delivered one of the biggest performances of her young career on the sport’s biggest stage. Named the championship game’s Most Valuable Player, Schmitt threw a complete game, recording eight strikeouts while allowing just five hits and two runs.
Meanwhile, Katy’s nationally recognized offense continued to make history.
The Tigers collected 10 hits in the championship game, including their 97th home run of the season — a UIL 6A record and the highest home run total in the nation this year.
“It’s just the perfect finish to everything we’ve worked for,” Katy Tigers Coach Meghan VanEtta said.
Throughout the season, the Tigers' lineup earned a reputation across Texas softball circles for its ability to generate offense from top to bottom. Known by many as “Death Valley,” the veteran group consistently produced runs against some of the state’s toughest competition.
Senior Leaders Leave a Lasting Legacy
The championship marked a fitting conclusion for seniors Ella Kate (EK) Smith and Maddie Smith, who helped lead the Tigers through one of the most successful eras in school history.
Their leadership, experience and production were key components of Katy’s deep postseason run and state championship finish.
At the same time, the future appears bright for the Tigers.
Junior Evie Willemssen and sophomore Abby Eldridge are among the returning stars expected to help anchor the program moving forward. Eldridge delivered a significant performance in the championship game, tallying a home run and three RBIs as Katy built a lead it would never surrender.
With a talented core returning and a freshman MVP already making her mark, expectations will undoubtedly remain high heading into the 2027 season.
Katy Softball Joins Elite Company in Texas
The 2026 championship adds to a growing legacy for Katy High School softball.
Combined with state championships won in 2015 and 2019, the Tigers now own three UIL state titles since 2010, the most by any Texas 6A softball program during that span. The achievement places Katy among the elite programs in the state's largest classification and highlights a decade-plus of sustained success.
In a sport where roster turnover can quickly change fortunes, maintaining championship-level performance over multiple generations of athletes speaks to the strength of the program’s culture, coaching and player development.
“This team represented everything that makes Katy athletics special — toughness, discipline, teamwork and an unwavering belief in one another,” Executive Director of Athletics Lance Carter said. “What they accomplished this season against elite competition is extraordinary, and they have earned their place among the great teams in Texas high school softball history.”
What This Means for Katy
Championships often become community moments, and this title is no exception.
From youth softball players dreaming of one day wearing the Tiger uniform to families who filled the stands throughout the season, the state championship reflects the investment and support that surround athletics in Katy ISD.
As one of the fastest-growing communities in the Houston region, Katy continues to build a reputation not only for strong schools and family-focused neighborhoods, but also for developing student-athletes who compete at the highest levels in Texas.
The 2026 Katy Tigers will now take their place among the program’s most celebrated teams — a group that combined historic offensive production, emerging young talent and veteran leadership to deliver another state championship for the community.
For Katy softball, the trophy is the latest reminder that excellence has become more than a goal. It has become a tradition.
