Encompass Health Opens New 50-Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in San Antonio’s Westover Hills, Expanding Recovery Care for Local Families

San Antonio / New Braunfels
October 09 2026

For San Antonio families navigating the challenges of a stroke, serious injury or life-changing medical condition, having access to specialized rehabilitation close to home can make an important difference. A new hospital on the city's Far West Side is expanding those options, offering patients a place to rebuild strength, regain independence and work toward returning to everyday life.

Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Westover Hills celebrated its grand opening on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at 1910 Rogers Road, San Antonio, TX 78251. The new 50-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital serves patients recovering from strokes, brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations and other complex orthopedic and neurological conditions.

The opening marks an expansion of rehabilitation services in the San Antonio area. Westover Hills is Encompass Health's 30th hospital in Texas and second location in San Antonio, adding another option for patients who need intensive therapy and medical supervision after a serious illness or injury.

New Westover Hills Hospital Focuses on Helping Patients Regain Independence

Recovery from a major medical event often continues long after a patient leaves an acute care hospital. For some individuals, that next stage involves relearning everyday skills, improving mobility or rebuilding the strength needed to return home safely.

The new Encompass Health hospital in Westover Hills is designed specifically for that stage of recovery.

Patients receiving inpatient rehabilitation care have access to an individualized treatment approach that brings together physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy, supported by specialized nursing and physician oversight.

According to Encompass Health, patients at the facility receive three hours of therapy per day, five days per week, along with 24-hour nursing care from professionals trained in rehabilitation.

The hospital's multidisciplinary care team includes therapists, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists and case managers who work together to address patients' medical needs and recovery goals. Independent physicians also make frequent visits to monitor patients' progress and coordinate treatment.

For families in Westover Hills and surrounding San Antonio communities, the additional rehabilitation facility provides another local option when determining where a loved one can receive the care needed after hospitalization.

What Types of Rehabilitation Services Are Available at Encompass Health Westover Hills?

The new San Antonio rehabilitation hospital provides comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation for individuals recovering from serious medical conditions, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions.

Its rehabilitation programs incorporate three primary types of therapy.

Physical therapy focuses on improving strength, movement, balance and mobility. Depending on a patient's condition, treatment may involve working toward walking independently, improving coordination or safely navigating everyday environments.

Occupational therapy helps patients regain the skills needed for daily activities, such as dressing, bathing, preparing meals and managing familiar routines. These services can be particularly important for individuals whose injuries or illnesses have affected their ability to care for themselves.

Speech therapy addresses challenges involving communication, cognition and swallowing. Patients recovering from strokes or neurological injuries may need assistance with speaking, understanding information, memory or safely eating and drinking.

Together, these services are intended to help patients make meaningful progress toward greater independence, with treatment tailored to their individual abilities and medical circumstances.

The hospital's inpatient setting also allows patients to receive intensive rehabilitation while remaining under continuous nursing supervision, an important consideration for those whose medical needs extend beyond what traditional outpatient therapy can provide.

Experienced Healthcare Leader Aron Sandquist Named First CEO

Leading the new hospital is Aron Sandquist, who was appointed chief executive officer in June 2026, ahead of the facility's opening.

Sandquist brings more than 25 years of hospital management and healthcare leadership experience to Westover Hills, including previous roles as director of operations, director of therapy and outpatient therapy manager at nationwide health systems.

His background combines administrative leadership with hands-on experience in rehabilitation services.

Sandquist holds a master's degree in occupational therapy and a bachelor's degree in health sciences from the College of St. Scholastica. He is also a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and maintains an active occupational therapy license in Texas.

When his appointment was announced on June 9, Sandquist emphasized the importance of building a hospital culture centered on both employees and the patients they serve.

“Our goal is to create a collaborative environment that supports both our staff and the community we serve,” Sandquist said. “I am confident our work will elevate the quality of care and make a meaningful impact on the lives of those who rely on us.”

Craig Funk, president of Encompass Health's Southwest region, also expressed confidence in Sandquist's ability to establish the new hospital's team and operations.

“Aron is a compassionate leader who will bring expertise and enthusiasm to Encompass Health Westover Hills,” Funk said. “He will have great success building a committed and dedicated team.”

The leadership appointment was an early step in preparing the hospital to serve patients throughout San Antonio and neighboring communities.

Why the New Rehabilitation Hospital Matters for San Antonio Families

The opening of Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Westover Hills adds specialized healthcare capacity to San Antonio's Far West Side, where access to medical services is an important consideration for residents and families.

For someone recovering from a stroke, spinal cord injury or major orthopedic procedure, rehabilitation can involve weeks of coordinated treatment, difficult milestones and ongoing support from loved ones.

Having another inpatient rehabilitation hospital in San Antonio may give families additional flexibility when exploring treatment options, particularly when proximity to home and family support are part of the decision-making process.

The new facility also reflects Encompass Health's continued investment in Texas, where the company now operates 30 rehabilitation hospitals.

While the hospital's opening does not guarantee admission or determine which facility is appropriate for an individual patient, it expands the region's available rehabilitation infrastructure.

Patients and families considering inpatient rehabilitation should consult their medical teams to determine whether intensive rehabilitation is appropriate, taking into account medical needs, admission requirements and insurance coverage.

Where Is Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Westover Hills Located?

The new hospital is located at 1910 Rogers Road, San Antonio, TX 78251, in the Westover Hills area on San Antonio's Far West Side.

Residents looking for inpatient physical rehabilitation, stroke rehabilitation, brain injury rehabilitation or spinal cord injury recovery services in San Antonio can learn more about the facility and its treatment programs through the official Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Westover Hills website.
