Empowering Tomorrow's Leaders: YMSL Cy-Fair Chapter Honors Service and Leadership

May 02 2024

The Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) Cy-Fair Chapter recently held their annual awards ceremony celebrating the dedication and community service of its young members. With a focus on facilitating volunteer work, building relationships and fostering responsible community service in young men, YMSL helps young men hone their leadership skills alongside their mothers.

Five students were spotlighted for their outstanding volunteer efforts. Nathan LaFleur (Cy-Woods HS ’24) received both the 'Heart of YMSL Award' and the 'Spirit of Service Award'. Kaden Goodwin and Ryan Conroy (Cy-Woods HS ’26) each received the 'Platinum Service Award', while Patrick Dunn (Cy-Woods HS ’25) and Luka Minica (Cy-Fair HS ’27) were announced the 'Top Dog' in their respective grade levels.

In addition to these award recipients, 12 graduating seniors were recognized for completing the YMSL program requirements. These diligent young men are set to embark on different paths, with several of them pursuing higher education at institutions like Northwestern University, Texas A&M University and Ole Miss, carrying their invaluable experiences from YMSL with them.

The YMSL chapter collaborated with numerous non-profit and community organizations, each chosen thoughtfully to serve a broad range of societal needs. The young men engaged in many initiatives from collecting and sorting books for children to helping maintain community gardens, supporting children in group homes, and organizing food pantries. Their work has significantly benefitted local groups like Bear: A Resource for CPS Kids, Boys and Girls Country, Cy-Fair Helping Hands, Cy-Hope, Reach Unlimited and Sleep in Heavenly Peace, to name a few.

The impact of the YMSL program is multifaceted, not only benefiting the community but also instilling important values and life skills in its young members. The organization stresses the importance of shared family service time, hands-on service experiences, and leadership opportunities. The lessons learned through YMSL extend beyond the duration of the program, setting a foundation for future community involvement and personal growth.

With 86 mothers and 98 young men as members for the 2024-2025 school year, the organization remains dedicated to its mission of 'Moms and Sons Serving Others'. The YMSL always welcomes new members, with the next membership drive scheduled for early 2025, targeting incoming 8th graders for the Class of 2029.
