Empowering Lives for 40 Years: Reach Unlimited's Journey of Inclusivity, Growth, and Gratitude
In 1983, a group of parents faced the daunting question of "What's next?" Their children, having graduated from special education, were at a crossroads with limited options. Determined to carve out a meaningful life for their young adults with disabilities, these parents formed a united front. They began writing grants and eventually established Reach Unlimited as a nonprofit organization on September 23, 1983, marking the genesis of a venture fueled by the collective desire to create opportunities where there were few.
Since its humble beginnings, Reach Unlimited has undergone a remarkable evolution in its services. Today, the organization operates 23 group homes, providing a supportive environment for 98 residents. In 2005, the Learning Activity Center was inaugurated, offering education and vocational programs to 200 members. This expansion reflects Reach Unlimited's commitment to continuous growth and adaptability, ensuring it meets the ever-changing needs of its community.
"What started as a dream to establish a group home for a small number of individuals has blossomed into a vibrant community that has provided services to more than 600 individuals and their families," said Kris Lusebrink, Director of Operations for Reach Unlimited.
Collaboration lies at the heart of Reach Unlimited's impact. Over 40 service providers utilize the Learning Activity Center, a place where members can grow and participate fully in an enriched environment in pursuit of their personal goals. Partnerships with organizations such as Special Olympics Texas and local employers demonstrate a broad network of support. The organization's programs encompass the three pillars of living, learning, and earning, offering a holistic approach to its members' well-being.
To commemorate its 40th anniversary, Reach Unlimited took a unique and flavorful approach. A special batch of mead was brewed by Wildflyer Mead Company in Navasota, Texas, using honey from Reach Unlimited beehives. This fermented honey wine, flavored with natural fruits and herbal ingredients, represents not only a celebration but also the dedication of a special group of supporters who initiated the Bee Hive program. The mead, taking approximately six months to brew, serves as a heartfelt thank-you gift to donors who have played a crucial role in Reach Unlimited's success. This special edition mead can be purchased online.
The 40th-anniversary milestone holds profound significance for Reach Unlimited and the community it serves, providing a moment of reflection on the organization's journey, a celebration of past achievements, and a catalyst for envisioning future growth and success. Reach Unlimited's success, both in the past and as it moves into the future, is indebted to the incredible donors and supporters who believe in its mission. As the organization continues to empower lives, the 40th anniversary stands as a testament to the collective effort and unwavering commitment that has shaped Reach Unlimited into the thriving community it is today.
Reach Unlimited will further celebrate their 40th anniversary at the Reach Unlimited Holiday Market on Friday, December 1 and Saturday, December 2. The community is invited to join the festivities and shop merchandise crafted and grown by members, light refreshments, a choir performance and door prizes. Additional details can be found in this flyer.
For those inspired to support Reach Unlimited, there are many ways to back the organization's mission, including shopping for plants, microgreens, fused glass creations, custom imprinted napkins and more, all created by members at the Reach Unlimited Cypress campus located at 11832 Mueller Cemetery Road. Through Reach Unlimited's Enterprise Program, Reach members gain a sense of purpose and self-worth while being creative, having fun and earning a paycheck.
