Discover Meyer Park: A Nature-Rich Escape with History at Champions Park’s Doorstep

July 24 2025

Just a short drive from Champions Park lies Meyer Park, a community treasure at 7700 Cypresswood Dr, Spring, TX 77379. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and maintained by Harris County Precinct 3, this 180-acre park offers a refreshing escape from everyday routines.

Outdoor Fun for Everyone

Meyer Park offers nearly four miles of trails for walking, jogging, and cycling, plus multiple soccer fields, pickleball and basketball courts, and an expansive playground for children. Families enjoy shaded picnic areas, pavilions, benches, and convenient restrooms, while dog lovers appreciate the dedicated dog park.

The park’s lake is a highlight for fishing enthusiasts. Stocked each year with rainbow trout by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, it also contains bluegill, channel catfish, and largemouth bass. Anglers are encouraged to catch and release, ensuring a thriving ecosystem for everyone to enjoy year-round.

The Gourley Nature Trail and Cypress Creek Connection

The half-mile Gourley Nature Trail links Meyer Park to nearby Collins Park, weaving through scenic greenery. This trail, named after Genevieve and Robert Gourley, was made possible through an easement donation and community partnerships like a $10,000 grant from REI, which funded benches and signage along the path.

A Hidden Archaeological History

Few residents realize Meyer Park is near an archaeological site along Cypress Creek that revealed more than 2,400 Native American artifacts dating back as far as 8,000 years ago. Excavations uncovered stone tools, pottery, fire pits, and animal bone fragments, providing insight into nomadic foragers who once returned seasonally to the area for hunting and fishing.

These discoveries deepen Meyer Park’s significance, connecting today’s recreation with a past stretching back to prehistoric Texas. The artifacts are now preserved for research at the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory at the University of Texas in Austin.
