Whether you want to enjoy nature, learn new skills, or participate in family-friendly events, Precinct 3 parks offer a wide range of programs throughout January. With 72 parks to explore, including Jesse H. Jones Park, Mercer Botanic Gardens, and Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve, there's something for everyone in this scenic region of Harris County.

Precinct 3 provides more than just beautiful green spaces. With amenities like hiking trails, dog parks, playgrounds, and fishing spots, the parks are the perfect destination to explore nature and stay active. In addition to the parks, Precinct 3’s community centers host a variety of events to keep all ages engaged. From fitness classes to educational seminars, these centers foster a sense of community across the county.

As part of its commitment to connecting people with the outdoors, Precinct 3's Park Programs offer numerous nature-based events and environmental education opportunities.   1. Butterfly Garden Volunteer Day

    • Date: Thursday, January 2
    • Time: 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
    • Location: Dennis Johnston Park (709 Riley Fuzzel Rd, Spring, TX 77373 | MAP)
    • Age: Ages 7+
    • Description: Volunteer to help maintain the butterfly garden and learn about local ecosystems.

  2. Fishing 101

    • Date: Friday, January 3
    • Time: 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

    • Age: All ages
    • Description: Learn the basics of fishing in a hands-on, outdoor setting at one of Precinct 3's parks.

  3. First Shot Archery

    • Date: Saturday, January 4
    • Time: 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (1-hour sessions)

    • Age: Ages 7+
    • Description: An introduction to archery with professional instructors in a safe, controlled environment.

  4. Atlatl-Spearthrowing

    • Date: Tuesday, January 7
    • Time: 9:00 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.

    • Age: Ages 7+
    • Description: Experience ancient spear-throwing techniques using atlatls in a fun, educational setting.

  5. Park After Dark - Owl Prowl

    • Date: Friday, January 10
    • Time: 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

    • Age: Ages 5+
    • Description: Join a guided night walk and discover the owls and other nocturnal creatures that call Precinct 3 parks home.

  6. First Shot Archery

    • Date: Thursday, January 16
    • Time: 9:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. (1-hour sessions)
    • Location: May Community Center (2100 Wolf Rd, Huffman, TX 77336 | MAP)
    • Age: Ages 7+
    • Description: Another chance to practice archery in a friendly, supportive environment at May Community Center.

  7. Tree Planting

    • Date: Saturday, January 18
    • Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

    • Age: Ages 7+
    • Description: Help plant trees and learn about the importance of trees for local ecosystems.

  8. Woodworking for Nature - Bird Feeder Buffet
    • Date: Wednesday, January 22
    • Time: 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

  9. Cart Tour

    • Description: Explore Burroughs Park from a comfortable cart as you learn about the local wildlife and park features.

  10. Park After Dark - Owl Prowl
    • Date: Friday, January 31
    • Time: 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

    • Age: Ages 5+
    • Description: A second opportunity this month to experience an owl prowl and discover the mysteries of the night at Dennis Johnston Park.
