Denton Guyer Tops Cy-Creek to Win Cy-Hoops Invitational Title

December 14 2022

Denton Guyer High School defeated Cypress Creek High School, 58-55, in the championship game of the 13th annual Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Invitational on Dec. 10 at the Berry Center to win the 24-team tournament.

It’s the second Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Invitational title for Denton Guyer. The Wildcats won it in 2017, joining Beaumont Ozen (2014 and 2015) and Lancaster (2018 and 2019) as the only two-time champions in the tournament’s history.

Cypress Creek finished as the invitational runner-up for the first time. The Cougars defeated Langham Creek (73-69), Klein (54-37) and Waxahachie (60-51) to reach the championship game.

Dickinson High School placed third in the tournament for a second year in a row, while Humble Summer Creek High School won the consolation championship by defeating Alvin Shadow Creek High School, 62-38.

Denton Guyer senior guard Connor Newton was named the Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Invitational Most Valuable Player. Cypress Creek senior guard Corey Hadnot won the De’Aaron Fox Most Outstanding Player Award. Named after the former Cypress Lakes High School basketball standout and current NBA star, the honor is awarded to a player who excels on the court but also embodies the spirit of a student-athlete.

“This is one of the best tournaments in Texas, when you look at the talent level, the hospitality and just how this tournament works,” Denton Guyer Head Coach Grant Long said. “The gauntlet you have to go through to win this is tough. You’re looking at one top-25 team after another. So if you win it, you know you were battle-tested. We’re excited for that as we move into district play and a playoff run.”
