Cypress Woods HS, Spillane MS Students Win at Texas TSA
Students in CFISD Technology Student Association (TSA) organizations won 183 first place and 154 second place awards at the Texas TSA State Competition, held April 21-23 in Fort Worth.
In addition to the more than 330 first and second place winners, the 2022 state competition was highlighted by Cypress Woods High School being named the TSA Division 6 state champion. Division 6 included schools that submitted more than 175 projects. Cypress Woods won the state title by having the most projects place in the division.

/“I’m extremely proud of our Wildcats,” said Steven Britt, Cypress Woods industrial technology teacher. “After 2020, when the state contest was canceled, and then 2021 being a totally virtual state contest, our students stepped up this year and put in a total 212 effort. Cypress Woods brought more entries to the Texas TSA State Competition than any other school in Texas, 120 more than our nearest competitor. The quality of their efforts on these projects allowed us to bring home the state championship for the eighth consecutive year!”

“Working with Addison is truly a pleasure,” said Kevin DeFreese, Spillane principals of manufacturing teacher. “She has the patients of an old-world woodworker. As she began gluing and then turning the 408 pieces of wood of her segmented vessel, I knew it was going to be something special and it truly is. I loved watching her methodically and patiently turn each segment and ring to make this masterpiece. I can’t wait to see what she makes next.”
Bridgeland, Cy-Fair, Cypress Creek, Cypress Park, Cypress Ranch, Cypress Springs, Cypress Woods, Jersey Village and Langham Creek high schools all had representatives at the state competition in categories that included engineering design, architecture design, wood manual turning, manufacturing, VEX Robotics and aerodynamics.
Representatives from Cook, Hamilton and Spillane middle schools also had representatives at the state competition. Approximately 400 projects created by CFISD students were featured at the 2022 contest.
“Congratulations to all of the students who placed at the state TSA contest,” said Mark Williams, CTE curriculum coordinator. “Their success is a reflection of their hard work and commitment to succeed. I’m very proud!”
