Cypress Ranch HS TSA students place at national conference

September 29 2022

Cypress Ranch High School Technology Student Association (TSA) students placed in the top 10 in two categories at the National TSA Conference, held June 26-30 in Dallas.

Cypress Ranch seniors Saurav Mathur and Mihir Bhatia placed fourth in the Geospatial Technology category at the national conference. Mathur’s and Bhatia’s project entailed the collection, visual representation and analysis of geospatial data regarding a manufacturing issue of their choice. The contest consisted of three different rounds, including submission of a documentation portfolio, submission of a visual infographic map and a defense presentation.

In addition to Mathur’s and Bhatia’s fourth place finish, fellow Cypress Ranch senior Cameron Reach and sophomore Sanmay Sarada placed sixth and ninth, respectively, in the Flight Endurance category at the national conference. Reach and Sarada had to construct a model plane powered solely by a rubber band with the goal of having the plane with the longest flight time.

“Words cannot express how proud I am of the efforts and determination displayed by the passionate members of our TSA chapter,” said Kristi Grove, Cypress Ranch TSA adviser. “It has been an honor to observe their on-stage recognition and it is a milestone in itself to even participate in the national conference. In my six years of experience as Cypress Ranch’s TSA adviser, we have never been this successful at the national level. The growth in skill and leadership exhibited by these participants has truly impressed me and is what I live for as a teacher.”

At the national conference, Bhatia, who was inducted as the Texas TSA state president at the State TSA Conference in April, launched a campaign to run for national TSA president. Bhatia gave a speech to the approximately 6,000 students who attended the national conference, published a social media campaign, ran a meet and greet booth to talk with fellow students and designed and laser-engraved items to hand out at his booth.

TSA is a national association of students that helps enhance personal development, leadership and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). TSA members apply and integrate STEM concepts through extracurricular activities, competitions and other related programs. Through TSA, students are eligible to compete in regional, state and national competitions in different categories.
