Cypress Creek High School Senior Kimberly Lam Earns Prestigious National Merit Scholarship, Heads to MIT

May 11 2026

For students at Cypress Creek High School, Kimberly Lam’s latest achievement is more than an academic milestone — it’s a reflection of the growing culture of excellence taking shape inside one of northwest Houston’s most competitive campuses.

Lam, a senior at Cypress Creek High School in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, was recently named a 2026 National Merit Scholar, one of the nation’s highest academic honors for high school students. The recognition comes with a National Merit Scholarship that will help support her college education as she prepares to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) this fall.

Out of millions of students who take the PSAT each year, only about 6,700 students nationwide ultimately earn National Merit Scholarships. For Cypress Creek families, educators and classmates, Lam’s selection highlights both her academic talent and the collaborative leadership she brought to campus throughout her high school career.

Upon graduating from Cypress Creek, Lam plans to study either Computer Science or Engineering at MIT — fields that continue to attract some of the country’s highest-achieving STEM students.

A Student Who Helped Build Academic Community at Cypress Creek

Teachers at Cypress Creek say Lam’s impact reached far beyond test scores and classroom performance.

“Kimberly Lam is one of the most excellent students I have had the pleasure of instructing in my 18 years of experience,” said Mark Mason, Cypress Creek’s AP Physics C teacher. “She is primarily responsible for the formation of the AP Physics 2 and AP Physics C courses this year due to her intense recruiting effort to grow the advanced science program here at Creek. She has also achieved great success outside of the classroom in Science Olympiad and Interact Club.”

Mason said Lam played a major role in encouraging more students to participate in advanced science coursework, helping strengthen opportunities for future Cypress Creek students interested in STEM education.

Her leadership also extended into peer support and collaborative learning. According to Mason, Lam organized a student Discord study server while preparing for AP Physics exams — a resource that students continue using today.

“She was one of only two students to receive a 5 on her AP Physics 1 exam two years ago. In preparation for the exam, she organized a Discord server that students joined to study together, and that server still exists today where she is studying for her two Physics C exams on Mechanics and Electricity & Magnetism with her classmates,” Mason said. “Her acceptance to MIT this year is well-deserved, as she is one of the kindest, most intelligent and most caring students I have ever met."

What It Takes to Become a National Merit Scholar

Lam was initially named a National Merit Semifinalist based on her performance on the 2024 PSAT/NMSQT exam.

Advancing to finalist status required a lengthy application process that included submitting academic records, documenting extracurricular involvement and honors, writing an essay, earning a recommendation from Cypress Creek High School and achieving SAT or ACT scores that confirmed her PSAT performance.

The process is designed to identify students who combine exceptional academic achievement with leadership, service and sustained commitment both inside and outside the classroom.

For many families in the Cypress and Cy-Fair area, National Merit recognition also represents the increasing competitiveness of local public schools as students pursue opportunities at top-tier universities across the country.

A Reflection of Growing STEM Excellence in Cy-Fair ISD

Lam’s success comes as Cypress-Fairbanks ISD continues expanding advanced academic and STEM opportunities across the district.

At Cypress Creek High School, programs like AP Physics, Science Olympiad and student-led academic initiatives have become increasingly important as students prepare for highly selective universities and careers in engineering, technology and research.

Educators say achievements like Lam’s help inspire younger students while reinforcing the value of mentorship, collaboration and rigorous academic preparation.

For the Cypress Creek community, her recognition serves as both a personal accomplishment and a point of pride for the campus she helped shape during her time there.

As graduation approaches, students and teachers alike will be watching to see what comes next for one of Cypress Creek High School’s most accomplished seniors.
