Cypress Academy of Gymnastics Expanding to FM 529 in Katy with $6 Million Facility as Corridor Improvements Advance

March 02 2026

Families in Katy and northwest Harris County will soon see a major addition along FM 529 as Cypress Academy of Gymnastics prepares to break ground on a new $6 million facility at 24542 FM 529 Road, Katy, TX 77493.

The project, set to begin construction on April 15, 2026, with an anticipated completion date of December 31, 2026, represents more than a new building. For parents searching for youth gymnastics in Katy, children’s tumbling classes near FM 529, or structured physical activity programs for kids in west Harris County, it marks expanded access to a long-standing family business rooted in the community since 1982.

A Growing Presence Along FM 529 in Katy

The new Cypress Academy facility will consist of a one-story, pre-engineered metal building totaling 59,500 square feet, divided into two tenant spaces. The first tenant space will house a gymnastics academy for children, designed without spectator seating to prioritize training space and athlete development. The second space will remain vacant for now, with a future tenant expected to submit a separate interior build-out permit.

Located in Harris County along the rapidly evolving FM 529 corridor, the project reflects continued residential growth in Katy and surrounding communities near SH 99 (Grand Parkway) and FM 362.

For nearby neighborhoods, the development signals increasing investment in youth recreation, extracurricular opportunities, and family-oriented services—often considered key factors in community stability and long-term property value.

A Family Tradition Since 1982

Cypress Academy was established in 1982 by Richard and Mary Ann Basham, beginning as a 5,000-square-foot gym on Huffmeister Road with one of each Olympic apparatus and a single dance room. What started as a small family endeavor grew steadily as demand for gymnastics expanded across northwest Houston.

In a letter included in the academy’s materials, the owner reflects on how the business evolved from that modest start into multiple expanded facilities over the decades, always centered on children and their development.

Over time, the academy expanded its Huffmeister location to 70,000 square feet, adding All-Star cheerleading, recreational and competitive gymnastics, tumbling programs, and later its Cypress Academy Ninja program.

Today, Cypress Academy offers:

  • Gymnastics and tumbling programs for children beginning as soon as they are able to walk
  • Ninja training facilities, including warped walls and obstacle structures
  • Cheerleading through Prodigy All-Stars
  • Summer camps, activity camps, and open gym opportunities
  • Parents’ Night Out and special event programming
  • Birthday parties hosted almost every Saturday

The academy currently operates locations in Huffmeister (Houston), Blackhorse (Cypress), Kuykendahl (Tomball), and The Woodlands, with the new FM 529 Katy location representing its continued westward expansion.

What This Means for Katy Families

For many families moving into new developments near FM 529, access to youth enrichment activities often becomes a deciding factor when choosing where to settle.

A dedicated gymnastics academy along FM 529 offers:

  • Shorter drive times for parents in Katy, Cypress, and Waller County
  • Structured physical development opportunities for children
  • Indoor recreational programming during hot Texas summers
  • After-school activity options close to home

As communities grow along the Grand Parkway corridor, family-centered amenities like Cypress Academy often help anchor developing areas, providing gathering spaces where children build confidence and friendships while parents build connections of their own.

FM 529 Road Expansion: The Bigger Picture

The new Cypress Academy facility also arrives as TxDOT advances plans to widen FM 529 from SH 99 (Grand Parkway) to FM 362, spanning Harris and Waller Counties.

Currently, FM 529 consists of a two-lane undivided roadway with four-foot outside shoulders and open ditches. Under the proposed improvements, TxDOT plans to:

  • Widen FM 529 to six lanes with an 18-foot raised median between SH 99 and Katy Hockley Cut Off Road
  • Expand to four lanes with an 18-foot raised median from Katy Hockley Cut Off Road to FM 362
  • Add 12-foot outside shoulders
  • Install sidewalks on both sides from SH 99 to FM 362
  • Provide turn lanes at intersections and designated median openings
  • Expand the proposed right-of-way to approximately 180 feet

The broader 12-mile corridor project is designed to blend urban and rural roadway improvements, improving mobility while adding 10-foot shared-use paths to support safer pedestrian and bicycle access.

However, funding remains a key challenge. Right-of-way acquisition is currently underway, and construction cost estimates have increased since initial projections. Coordination with the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) and TxDOT will determine when the project moves fully into construction phases in the coming years.

For businesses like Cypress Academy, the roadway improvements could significantly enhance accessibility. For residents, the expansion could mean improved traffic flow, safer turning movements, and better long-term infrastructure planning as growth continues west of Grand Parkway.

A Corridor in Transition

The combination of private investment—like the Cypress Academy new construction—and planned public infrastructure upgrades underscores how quickly the FM 529 corridor is evolving.

For longtime residents, the transformation reflects a shift from rural roadway to a more developed suburban artery. For newer families, it represents opportunity: improved amenities, enhanced connectivity, and expanded youth programming close to home.

Construction on the Cypress Academy Katy facility is scheduled to begin in April 2026, with completion expected by year’s end. As development continues along FM 529, residents can expect more updates on both the academy’s progress and the TxDOT roadway expansion.
