Cy Lakes HS Custodian Nominated for LifeChanger of the Year Award

March 27 2024

Cypress Lakes High School Head Custodian Marlen Oliva de Sandoval has been nominated for the 2023-2024 LifeChanger of the Year Award.

The award, sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation, honors public school educators and employees who are making a difference in students’ lives by exemplifying excellence, positive influence and leadership.

Sandoval was nominated by Cypress Lakes colleague Matt Wells. Wells shared in his nomination that Sandoval’s love for Cypress Lakes is contagious, and she treats the building like her home. Sandoval considers students and staff as her extended family.

“Marlen is quick to remind our students, like a favorite aunt, how to clean up after themselves and take care of their school,” Wells said. “She models responsibility and ownership for everyone, and our students follow suit, taking pride in their school. Her efforts are why our campus looks like it was built yesterday, despite it being our 15th year and Marlen deserves recognition for her inspirational leadership.”

Each year, LifeChanger of the Year receives hundreds of nominations from across the country. Winners are chosen by a selection committee comprised of former winners and education professionals. To be considered for one of the 17 individual awards, nominees must make a positive impact in students’ lives, enhance their school or district’s atmosphere, culture and pride, demonstrate exemplary leadership, possess a proven record of professional excellence, show commitment to building a nurturing environment that supports learning and adhere to the highest moral and ethical standards.

“Marlen is most deserving of this nomination,” said Dr. Lanette Bellamy, Cypress Lakes principal. “She is truly amazing. Marlen leads our custodial staff with a smile on her face and love for our school every single day. Marlen goes above and beyond to ensure that our school is beautiful and clean for every one of our 3,200 students and 300 staff members. She is always willing to do whatever is needed to get the job done and everyone on our staff truly loves her for it.”

Community members are encouraged to leave comments on nominees’ profiles to help the selection committee choose who will receive final recognition. Visit the LifeChanger of the Year website here to find Sandoval’s profile.
