Cypress Falls High School senior Jesaiah McWright and Cypress Ranch High School senior Dubem Muoneke were honored as finalists for the Guy V. The winner was announced among the 10 finalists during a reception on March 29 at the University of Houston’s Athletics/Alumni Center.

The 2022 Guy V. Lewis Award winner was P.J. Haggerty of Crosby High School.

McWright and Muoneke each led their teams to a share of the District 16-6A championship and trip to the Class 6A Region II semifinals.

McWright’s postseason honors include being named to the Class 6A All-State and All-Region II teams by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC). He was voted 16-6A’s Most Valuable Player and signed to play collegiately at Louisiana Tech University.

“This is an honor,” McWright said. “There are a lot of great Houston basketball players and just being named one of them is a big deal.”

Muoneke was also named to the TABC Class 6A All-Region II Team to go with being named the District 16-6A Offensive Player of the year. He is signed to play collegiately at Abilene Christian University.

“One thing I’m going to remember the most is those late nights with just me and my dad in the gym trying to get better,” Muoneke said of his father, Gabe, who starred at Cypress Falls and the University of Texas before playing professionally. “There were times when I thought I wasn’t good enough and thought about giving it up, but he was there pushing me through.”

Since 2012, the Guy V. Lewis Award Committee has honored the legacy of the former longtime University of Houston basketball head coach. Lewis led the program to nearly 600 victories and five Final Four appearances in the NCAA Men’s Tournament.

Two former CFISD basketball standouts are previous winners of the Guy V. Lewis Award. Former Cypress Lakes High School star De’Aaron Fox was named the winner in 2016, while Cypress Falls standout Nigel Hawkins earned the top honor in 2017.
