Cy-Fair to Honor First Responders and Fund Student Futures at Salute to Our Heroes Featuring 9/11 Survivor Joe Torrillo
Every October, the Cy-Fair community comes together for an evening that’s equal parts reverence and resolve. Salute to Our Heroes, hosted by the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF), will return on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Hyatt Regency Houston West.
More than a formal dinner or fundraising gala, the event is a heartfelt tribute to the military veterans and first responders whose courage shapes our communities—and a celebration of the students whose futures are shaped by community support.
A Story of Survival, Sacrifice, and Strength
The 2025 program will feature keynote speaker Joe Torrillo, a retired FDNY Lieutenant and 9/11 survivor whose story has inspired thousands.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, Torrillo rushed to the World Trade Center knowing the risks. Trained in construction technology, he understood the towers’ collapse was inevitable—but he pressed forward anyway to help those trapped inside.

He was ultimately buried alive in the destruction, suffering life-threatening injuries. It took four years of recovery to rebuild his body, but Torrillo never let go of his sense of duty. Today, he shares his journey not just as a survivor, but as a reminder of the resilience and selflessness that defines those who serve.
His presence at this year’s event is expected to be a powerful moment—one that bridges remembrance and hope, heartbreak and healing.
Supporting Students Across CFISD
Proceeds from Salute to Our Heroes fund college scholarships for graduating seniors at every Cypress-Fairbanks ISD high school, as well as staff development grants that help educators innovate and lead in the classroom.
Since 1970, the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation has awarded more than $13.4 million in scholarships and $4 million in educator support—none of it from tax dollars. With CFISD’s continued growth and rising education costs, community events like this play a critical role in giving every student a shot at a brighter future.
