Cy-Fair Organizations Rally to Help Students Start the School Year Strong with Free Supplies, Backpacks and Community Support

West Houston / Cypress  /  West Houston / Cypress
June 09 2026

As families across Cypress and the Cy-Fair area begin preparing for the 2026-27 school year, the cost of school supplies, backpacks, clothing and other essentials can quickly add up. For many households, especially those already navigating financial challenges, the back-to-school season can bring added stress alongside the excitement of a new academic year.

Fortunately, two well-known local nonprofits—Cy-Fair Helping Hands and Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM)—are once again working to ease that burden by providing free school supplies and backpacks to Cy-Fair ISD students while also inviting the community to help support families in need.

The efforts come at a time when the need remains significant. According to the latest Texas Education Agency data, 58.9% of Cy-Fair ISD students are classified as economically disadvantaged. National Center for Education Statistics data also indicates that 12.3% of local families live below the poverty level, while 15.7% receive SNAP benefits. Additionally, nearly 1,500 CFISD students meet the federal McKinney-Vento definition of homelessness, highlighting the challenges some students face before they ever step into a classroom.

For many children, a backpack filled with supplies represents more than notebooks and pencils—it can provide confidence, dignity and a sense of readiness on the first day of school.

Cy-Fair Helping Hands Collecting Supplies Ahead of July 25 Back-to-School Bash

Cy-Fair Helping Hands' annual Back-to-School Supply Drive is currently underway, with donations being collected through Tuesday, July 22, 2026.

The organization is seeking new backpacks, including both cloth and clear backpacks, along with school supplies commonly requested by teachers and campuses throughout Cy-Fair ISD. Among the most-needed items are Crayola crayons, Crayola markers, spiral notebooks, composition notebooks, pocket folders with brads and construction paper.

Donations can be dropped off at:

Or at:

The organization has also created Amazon, Walmart and Target wish lists to make giving easier for community members who prefer to shop online.

Those donated supplies will help stock the organization's annual Back-to-School Bash, scheduled for Saturday, July 25, 2026 from 9 a.m. to noon at Calvary Community Church, located at 7550 Cherry Park Drive in Houston.

The event is designed specifically for CFISD students from families with limited resources. In addition to receiving free backpacks and school supplies, children and families can enjoy games, activities, books, family resources and opportunities to meet local first responders.

The event has become a summer tradition for many local families, combining practical assistance with a welcoming community atmosphere.

A Longstanding Mission to Serve Cy-Fair Families

Cy-Fair Helping Hands has served the community for decades through programs focused on food assistance, homelessness prevention, emergency support, counseling, education and family stability.

The organization's impact extends far beyond back-to-school season.

According to its 2025 Year in Numbers report, Cy-Fair Helping Hands provided nutritious food to 26,769 individuals, distributed more than 535,000 pounds of food, helped fund 2,146 nights of shelter for homeless families, and supplied backpacks and school supplies to 2,302 students preparing for the school year.

Volunteers contributed more than 29,000 hours of service, while programs ranging from counseling to scholarship assistance helped support individuals and families throughout the Cy-Fair area.

For local students, the Back-to-School Bash is one part of a larger effort to ensure children have the tools they need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Cypress Assistance Ministries Preparing for August 1 Backpack Distribution

Just one week later, Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM) will host its annual Free Backpack & Supply Distribution Drive-Thru Event on Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will take place at:

Families with returning Cy-Fair ISD students can drive through to receive a free backpack filled with school supplies, along with a clothing voucher.

Participants must provide either a government-issued photo ID or proof of address. Distribution will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

CAM is also currently accepting school supply donations through July 31. Needed items include backpacks, binders, composition books, crayons, folders, glue sticks, markers, notebook paper, pencils, rulers, scissors and other classroom essentials.

The annual initiative helps hundreds of local students begin the school year equipped with the supplies many families might otherwise struggle to afford.

Building a Stronger Cypress Community

Founded to provide compassionate assistance and resources to neighbors facing hardship, Cypress Assistance Ministries has grown into one of the area's most impactful nonprofit organizations.

Its services include food assistance, housing and utility support, education programs, workforce development and seasonal outreach efforts.

According to CAM's 2024 impact report, the organization helped feed 36,105 neighbors through its food pantry, distributed more than 1.2 million pounds of food, assisted 665 households with rent and utility support, and provided backpacks filled with school supplies to 2,111 students.

Volunteers contributed more than 37,000 hours of service, demonstrating the depth of community support behind the organization's mission.

The annual backpack program reflects a simple but powerful goal: helping children arrive at school ready to focus on learning rather than worrying about whether they have the supplies they need.

How Residents Can Help

For those looking to make a difference close to home, both organizations offer opportunities to support local students and families.

Residents, businesses, churches, civic clubs and neighborhood groups can contribute school supplies, donate backpacks, volunteer at upcoming events or make financial contributions that help expand the reach of these programs.

As the first day of school approaches, these community-driven efforts serve as a reminder that preparing students for success is not just the responsibility of parents and teachers—it is something an entire community can rally around.
