What It Takes to Become a Volunteer Firefighter in Cy-Fair
Becoming a volunteer firefighter in Cy-Fair requires a strong commitment to training and community service. Recruits must complete a 32-week Fire Training Academy, pass a physical ability test, and earn state certifications in firefighting and emergency medical response. The program is designed to prepare volunteers to respond to a wide range of emergencies, from structure fires to vehicle accidents and medical crises.
Volunteers play a vital role in supporting the department’s mission, especially in a growing community like Northwest Harris County, where demand for emergency services continues to rise.
“This is no small achievement,” said one training officer. “The hours, the physical training, the mental preparation—it takes dedication. We’re proud to see these new firefighters step up and commit to serving their neighbors.”
A Legacy of Service and Growth
Founded in the late 1950s, the Cy-Fair Fire Department has grown into a nationally recognized organization under the leadership of Fire Chief Amy Ramon, who joined the department in 2014. With more than 350 firefighters and EMTs, both career and volunteer, CFFD is committed to providing high-quality fire and emergency medical services across unincorporated Harris County.
From the start, the department has relied on the strength of its volunteers—community members who undergo the same training as career firefighters and respond with the same level of readiness and professionalism.
