Cy-Fair Fire Department Offers Tips for Distracted Driver Awareness Month
The Cy-Fair Fire Department wants everyone to be safe on the roads and with April being Distracted Driving Awareness month, let’s put the distractions away while we are in a moving vehicle.
Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system — anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that driving while texting is six times more dangerous than driving drunk.
Here are a few ideas to help you have fewer distractions while driving:
- Place your purse on the floorboard of your back seat.
- Put your phone inside the center console.
- If you are traveling with a beverage, only take sips while at a red light or your vehicle is in park. Never drive while drinking an alcoholic beverage or while under the influence.
- Only change stereo settings at a red light or when your vehicle is in park.
- Use your vehicle's voice commands feature to change the stereo settings, get directions, listen to or send text messages, etc. if available.
We can all play a part in the fight to save lives by ending distracted driving. To learn more about the dangers of distracted driving, visit nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/distracted-driving.
