Cy-Fair Fire Department Offers Life-Saving Tips on Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

December 24 2022

How does CO harm you? Carbon monoxide is harmful when breathed because it displaces oxygen in the blood and deprives the heart, brain and other vital organs of oxygen. Large amounts of CO can overcome you in minutes without warning, causing you to lose consciousness and suffocate.

We strongly recommend:
  • Do not use your stove or oven to heat your home.
  • Do not use propane heaters in your home.
  • Leave a small crack in a window when using your central heating unit/HVAC.
  • Go into your attic and inspect all ducts and hoses that lead in and out of your HVAC unit.
  • Do not use a BBQ grill to heat inside the home.
  • Make sure the damper in your fireplace is open when using.
  • Do not use a portable generator inside your home or garage. Use in a well ventilated area.
Having a carbon monoxide detector, along with a smoke detector can save lives!
