CPES Teacher Sandy Guillory Selected as ConocoPhillips Math Teacher of the Month Grand Prize Winner
Congratulations to Canyon Pointe Elementary fourth grade math teacher Sandy Guillory for being selected as the ConocoPhillips Math Teacher of the Month Grand Prize Winner.
Celebrations erupted at Canyon Pointe Elementary on Friday morning when fourth grade teacher and former ConocoPhillips Math Teacher of the Month Sandy Guillory was named the ConocoPhillips Math Teacher of the Month Grand Prize Winner through a random drawing.
Representatives from ConocoPhillips surprised Ms. Guillory on campus with the news. As the Grand Prize winner, she won a trip to West Palm Beach, Florida to see the Houston Astros during 2024 Spring Training.
“Sandy Guillory is a model of what a Tomball ISD math teacher looks like,” Canyon Pointe Elementary Principal Erin Johnson said. “As a teacher, she motivates her students to be successful by building lasting relationships and individualizing their learning. As a teammate, Mrs. Guillory serves as the 4th grade team leader and has been an invaluable asset to the campus! I can't think of a more deserving teacher to receive this honor!”
A Look Back - Last school year, ConocoPhillips and the Houston Astros recognized six math teachers during the baseball season, running from April to September. The winning teachers were selected by an external committee made up of representatives from academia, business and the nonprofit sector.
Out of more than 500 nominations this year, Ms. Guillory was chosen as one of six Math Teachers of the Month for May 2023, and the only one outside of the South Houston area.
When evaluating Ms. Guillory, the committee considered several areas in which she excelled as an educator in Tomball ISD. She showcased a commitment to excellence in mathematics teaching, showed evidence of creativity and innovation in the classroom, demonstrated leadership skills, showed effective use of traditional and nontraditional teaching tools, continues to go above and beyond to make in a difference in students' lives, demonstrated increase in student achievement in mathematics and demonstrated increase in student affinity for mathematics.
“Sandy Guillory uses the Math Workshop model effectively to differentiate learning in her class to meet the needs of all students,” Tomball ISD Director of Math David Surdovel said. “She also utilizes various instructional methods to determine understanding and provide feedback. I am so proud to work alongside Sandy Guillory in Tomball ISD.”
Over the last seven years, Tomball ISD has had seven incredible math teachers named a ConocoPhillips Math Teacher of the Month. Ms. Guillory follows a rich tradition of Tomball ISD math teachers being recognized for this award including Christopher Penny (CPJHS 2017), Haley Galyean (OIS 2018), Allison Bearden (OIS 2019), Susanne Whitley (NIS 2020), Jennifer Koster (TMHS 2022), and Jessica Hampton (OIS 2022). Sandy is also our first math teacher chosen from an elementary school for this award.
Ms. Guillory also joins NIS math teacher Susanne Whitley (2020) as Grand Prize winners.
Congratulations, Ms. Guillory!
